Umegashima Onsen is said to have been discovered by a woodcutter approximately 1,700 years ago during the reign of Emperor Ōjin (270 AD). However, it became well-known as a hot spring retreat during the era of Takeda Shingen. Baikunro, established in the early Meiji period (140 years ago), has a history of over 300 years when including its former Edo-era name, "Eijuken." Until 1955, when the exclusive rights to use the Onsen were returned to Shizuoka City, Umegashima Onsen was solely operated by Baikunro. Even today, Baikunro remains the most historic and largest Ryokan in Umegashima Onsen.
