Facing the Sea of Japan, Tango–Kumihama is a scenic area where many beautiful landscapes remain. A legend has been passed down here. In the Kamakura period, the monk Ippen traveled across The whole country to save people, distributing nembutsu talismans and performing dancing nembutsu. After finishing his preaching in Kyoto and heading toward San’in, he was chanting the nembutsu in Kumihama when clouds suddenly gathered and a blue dragon appeared over the sea. Dragon worship has long been practiced in this region, and it is said that the blue dragon revealed itself before Ippen to form a bond with the nembutsu. Even today, the Sea of Japan as seen from Kumihama retains an air of mystery. Like Ippen once did, you can be embraced by this scenery and find rest here.

Skilled in traditional ink-line marking, Heikichi was known locally as “Sumiya no Hei-san” (“Hei from the ink shop”). From this nickname came the house name Tanpei, later renamed “Tanpei,” and it has since been operated as the oldest Accommodation in Tango Town to this day. The spirit of hospitality of “Sumiya no Hei-san” has been passed down through six generations and continues today.

Monjuso Shourotei is a charming single-story wooden accommodation nestled on a small cape, surrounded by aged trees behind the Wisdom Monju-do Hall. Experience the ever-changing beauty of Japan's nature through different times of day and seasons in this tranquil retreat far removed from worldly noise.Beloved by many literary figures, this accommodation was named "Shourotei" by writer Giichi Fujimoto, who reflected on "the dew that forms on the tips of Amanohashidate’s pine leaves and how it deepens human connections at this travel lodge." The late author Hitoshi Yamaguchi also praised Shourotei in his book "Favorite Places," describing it as "completely flat and peaceful. That flatness seems to stretch endlessly.
