Shuzenji, where Shuzenji Onsen Yukaido Kikuya is located, is a historic Onsen town steeped in legends related to Kobo Daishi. The current Kikuya was once referred to as an annex. It is said that there was also a three-story main building at the time. Even the renowned author Natsume Soseki stayed in the main building. Back then, Kikuya owned approximately 40 to 45 cho (hectares) of forest land, and there were generations of mountain keepers. Additionally, there were always about 20 craftsmen, including gardeners, plasterers, and carpenters. At that time, many landscaping projects were undertaken, such as creating rest areas for guests who stayed for extended periods, which required such a workforce.
