Renowned author Naoya Shiga made this Property his regular stay, where his famous short story "At Kinosaki" was born. The wooden architecture, built in 1927 and recognized as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan, along with a 300-tsubo Japanese garden, retains its charm. In November 2013, the Property underwent a major renovation of its lobby, dining area, and large public bath, transforming into a modern Japanese Ryokan that blends history with contemporary design.From the Room's veranda, guests can enjoy the changing seasons in the garden, or lose themselves in a book in the library. After changing into a yukata, take a leisurely stroll to explore the local Onsen baths, and then savor the delights of the Sea of Japan paired with local sake in the modern dining area. Dogo Onsen, Japan's oldest Onsen with a history of approximately 3,000 years, has been celebrated as one of the nation's most renowned hot springs, even mentioned in poems such as "Shiratama no Ishiyu" and "Iyo no Yuketa." Funaya Ryokan (now known as "Funaya") opened here during the Kan'ei era of the Edo period. For over 390 years, it has been cherished as a beloved Property for countless travelers. Dogo Onsen, which appears in ancient texts like the "Nihon Shoki" and "Manyoshu," was made decisively famous by Natsume Soseki's novel "Botchan." The haiku, "Hajimete no Funaya tomari wo shigure keri," was composed in the autumn of 1893 when Soseki stayed at Funaya during his first year as a teacher in Matsuyama. Funaya Ryokan has also been a favorite Property of literary figures connected to Matsuyama, such as Masaoka Shiki and Takahama Kyoshi. At "Dogo Onsen Funaya," you can enjoy a vast garden of approximately 1,500 tsubo (about 4,950 square meters) with a flowing mountain stream. The previous Matsusho-so was designated as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2003 and cherished by many until it was lost to fire in 2021. Despite this loss, with encouragement from numerous supporters, we are proud to announce its revival as the new "Matsusho-so" on March 1, 2024. The building incorporates design elements of the original Matsusho-so while embracing traditional Sukiya architecture that harmonizes with nature. Each room features a private open-air bath overlooking a small garden where guests can enjoy seasonal landscapes. We have created a space that feels "new yet somehow nostalgic."
