In the first year of Ansei (1854), the founder of our Property, Iwakuniya Sobei, received permission from the magistrate's office to develop the area. He built a bridge over the Momiji River in front of the Property and established a teahouse by the stream as a resting place for travelers. This marked the beginning of "Miyajima no Yado Iwaso." Later, the bustling popularity continued, and the Property officially opened as a Ryokan in the early Meiji period. The main entrance building dates back to 1892 (Meiji 25), and the lobby was constructed during renovations in 1981 (Showa 56). Today, we draw natural Onsen, a rarity on the island, and offer accommodations in the main building, new building, and detached rooms. As a Ryokan nestled within a national park, we strive daily to ensure our guests can relax and enjoy their stay.

Perched 60 meters above sea level on the heights of Hiraiso Cape, surrounded by Ishikari Bay, you can take in sweeping views of the endless blue sea and sky, with a full panorama of Otaru Bay and downtown Otaru spread out below. Ginrinso, a historic herring mansion and ryotei-style Accommodation with Onsen, is regarded as a representative example of fishery architecture. It was originally built as the residence of a major fishing magnate in Yoichi, once famed at the base of the Shakotan Peninsula as a prosperous herring fishing ground. Its grand yet elegant presence has only grown more dignified over more than 140 years since its founding, and it is now counted among “Hokkaido’s 100 Cultural Properties.” While preserving its traditional exterior and furnishings as faithfully as possible, we have enhanced our modern Facilities to pursue even greater comfort and functionality. In the rear garden overlooking the Sea of Japan, we have newly added an open-air rock bath rich in refined charm; reborn under the name “Hiraiso Onsen,” we begin anew as one of Otaru’s newest tourist attractions.

Hida-tei Hanaougi is elegantly constructed using abundant Kiso Hinoki wood, offering a sophisticated ambiance. This provides tranquility to visiting guests. Surrounding the lobby, filled with a sense of grandeur, is a pond designed to resemble a moat, where graceful Nishikigoi carp swim, surely alleviating travel fatigue. Enjoy the rich natural beauty and serene location that changes with the seasons, and fully experience the blossoming charm of the ancient city.

Enjoy breathtaking views of Lake Gosho and the mountains of Iwate from your room, offering picturesque seasonal landscapes that resemble a painting. The Onsen features two distinct large baths: "Hitorijime no Yu," an open-air bath with stunning panoramic views, and "Nanbu Magariya no Yu," a traditional hot spring inspired by the Nanbu Magariya architecture with natural flowing spring water. A 400-year-old Property located in the center of the Shibu Onsen town. Enjoy a tour of six types of hot springs and 14 baths, all of which are completely private within the Property. Relax your mind and body with 100% natural Onsen water. <The nostalgic town of Shibu Onsen, filled with steam> It is said that Shibu Onsen was discovered by the Buddhist monk Gyoki during the Nara period. Later, the Onsen-ji Temple was established through the contributions of the Sengoku warlord Takeda Shingen. During the battles of Kawanakajima, Shibu Onsen served as a healing place for wounded soldiers. The first proprietor of Kokuya, Ichizaemon, originally ran a rice merchant business called Kokuya but later opened an inn for travelers. Since then, the Property has been cherished by guests, and the current proprietor is the 16th generation.
