From this nickname came the house name Tanpei, later renamed “Tanpei,” and it has since been operated as the oldest Accommodation in Tango Town to this day. The spirit of hospitality of “Sumiya no Hei-san” has been passed down through six generations and continues today.

The Akakura Kanko Resort Hotel was founded in 1937 (Showa 12). Built by the Okura Zaibatsu following the Kamikochi Imperial Hotel and Kawana Hotel, it is a pioneer among Japan's Resort Hotels. The Hotel is located at an altitude of 1,000 meters, where a sea of clouds can sometimes be seen below. In addition to the timeless charm since its founding, all rooms and the Japanese restaurant were renovated in 2008. Furthermore, on December 12, 2009, a large public bath with open-air baths, a spa salon, and guest rooms with open-air Onsen were newly opened. Dogo Onsen, Japan's oldest Onsen with a history of approximately 3,000 years, has been celebrated as one of the nation's most renowned hot springs, even mentioned in poems such as "Shiratama no Ishiyu" and "Iyo no Yuketa." Funaya Ryokan (now known as "Funaya") opened here during the Kan'ei era of the Edo period. For over 390 years, it has been cherished as a beloved Property for countless travelers. Dogo Onsen, which appears in ancient texts like the "Nihon Shoki" and "Manyoshu," was made decisively famous by Natsume Soseki's novel "Botchan." The haiku, "Hajimete no Funaya tomari wo shigure keri," was composed in the autumn of 1893 when Soseki stayed at Funaya during his first year as a teacher in Matsuyama. Funaya Ryokan has also been a favorite Property of literary figures connected to Matsuyama, such as Masaoka Shiki and Takahama Kyoshi. At "Dogo Onsen Funaya," you can enjoy a vast garden of approximately 1,500 tsubo (about 4,950 square meters) with a flowing mountain stream.
