As the tea ceremony flourished from the Azuchi–Momoyama period onward, tatami came to cover entire Rooms, and Japanese people began sitting in seiza.Beyond tea ceremony, many Japanese arts ending in “-do”—such as calligraphy, flower arrangement, and judo—are deeply connected to tatami, which is considered a foundation that helped shape the Japanese spirit.Space, cuisine, and hospitality—this is what a Ryokan offers as it embraces the beauty of Japan’s four seasons in every detail. The first-generation owner, Tadayoshi Ota, was a connoisseur so esteemed that Rosanjin described him as "the most notable man in Hokuriku, a national guest of Kanazawa, and a great figure in tea gatherings." It is said that tea masters, connoisseurs, and gourmets, including Dono Masuda, frequently visited from Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka, drawn by Tadayoshi's hospitality. His attention to ingredients and dedication to tableware were so exceptional that they were even passed down to "Hoshioka Saryo." As Rosanjin remarked, "He did not use tea as an ornament for himself nor as a business," reflecting the heartfelt and unpretentious hospitality that was the philosophy of Yamanoo. After the war, adapting to changes in lifestyle, "Yamanoo" was reborn as "Kanazawa Yamanoo." The current owner, Tatsuya Motoya, is the fifth generation since Tadayoshi. While time has passed and the name has changed, the spirit of hospitality, "one guest, one pavilion," has been faithfully carried on since its founding.

Our Ryokan was established in 1870 (Meiji 3) as Ishimura Ryokan in the Nanpoen area, slightly south of its current location. The founder, who served as a head officer at the Hakone checkpoint during the Edo period, began developing Onsen in Owakudani during the early Meiji era and started operating as a healing retreat by drawing hot spring water from there. In 1913 (Taisho 2), we relocated to this site and renamed it Senkoro. For this reason, we are known as Sengokuhara's original Onsen retreat.Before World War II, Sengokuhara was a special area frequented by prominent figures from political and financial circles. The nearby Sengoku Golf Course was even played on by Emperor Showa alongside international diplomats.Many distinguished guests have stayed at our Ryokan over the years, including notable figures such as Eiichi Shibusawa, Kihachiro Okura, Kichizaemon Sumitomo, Aritomo Yamagata, Takashi Hara, Kiichiro Hiranuma; artists like Somei Yuki and Suiun Komuro; literary figures such as Kiyokata Kaburaki and Sotaro Yasui; and writers like Sohou Tokutomi, Masao Kumei, Chogoro Kaionji, Jun Takami among others.Sengokuhara is part of Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park's special district with strict environmental regulations. Building height limits along with restrictions on colors, decorations or signage are rigorously enforced here. In front of our property lies Hakone’s outer rim mountains covered in lush greenery that turn beautifully red during autumn foliage season. Kinnotake Sengokuhara is a Ryokan inspired by the famous Japanese tale "The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter" (Taketori Monogatari). This mysterious story, whose author remains unknown, tells of a beautiful woman courted by five men, none succeeding in winning her heart... and ends with a fleeting romance with the emperor before she is taken back to the moon. With this enchanting tale as its concept, we have created a harmonious retreat blending Hakone's natural beauty with playful and extraordinary spaces designed to provide relaxation and escape from everyday life.

During the Edo Kaei era, a time accelerating towards the end of the Tokugawa shogunate, "Minato no Yado Teiya" welcomed travelers at Yaizu Bay, which opens to the sea following the Kuroshio Current.
