Shuzenji, where Shuzenji Onsen Yukaido Kikuya is located, is a historic Onsen town steeped in legends related to Kobo Daishi. The current Kikuya was once referred to as an annex. It is said that there was also a three-story main building at the time. Even the renowned author Natsume Soseki stayed in the main building. Back then, Kikuya owned approximately 40 to 45 cho (hectares) of forest land, and there were generations of mountain keepers. Additionally, there were always about 20 craftsmen, including gardeners, plasterers, and carpenters. At that time, many landscaping projects were undertaken, such as creating rest areas for guests who stayed for extended periods, which required such a workforce. During the era of the main building, there was a grand banquet hall called Kikuya Sanso, boasting an astonishing number of tatami mats.

An Accommodation in Awazu Onsen, founded in Yoro 2 (718). Discovered by the monk Taicho Daishi, its sacred spring still flows today. A nationally registered commemorative garden passed down from Kobori Enshu to Sano Toemon. Our Ryokan was established in 1870 (Meiji 3) as Ishimura Ryokan in the Nanpoen area, slightly south of its current location. The founder, who served as a head officer at the Hakone checkpoint during the Edo period, began developing Onsen in Owakudani during the early Meiji era and started operating as a healing retreat by drawing hot spring water from there. In 1913 (Taisho 2), we relocated to this site and renamed it Senkoro. For this reason, we are known as Sengokuhara's original Onsen retreat.Before World War II, Sengokuhara was a special area frequented by prominent figures from political and financial circles. The nearby Sengoku Golf Course was even played on by Emperor Showa alongside international diplomats.Many distinguished guests have stayed at our Ryokan over the years, including notable figures such as Eiichi Shibusawa, Kihachiro Okura, Kichizaemon Sumitomo, Aritomo Yamagata, Takashi Hara, Kiichiro Hiranuma; artists like Somei Yuki and Suiun Komuro; literary figures such as Kiyokata Kaburaki and Sotaro Yasui; and writers like Sohou Tokutomi, Masao Kumei, Chogoro Kaionji, Jun Takami among others.Sengokuhara is part of Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park's special district with strict environmental regulations. The Yugawara Onsen area, celebrated even in the ancient Manyoshu anthology, is renowned as a place where high-quality Onsen waters flow. The history of Fujiya Ryokan is long-standing, with records indicating that its predecessor, an Onsen inn, existed as far back as the late Edo period. In fact, buildings from the end of the Edo era remained until 1968. According to the "Yugawara Guide" published in 1918, Fujiya Ryokan began as an Onsen Ryokan in 1876, and at the time, it was poetically named "Shuhoen." Crossing the Nagahashi Bridge over the Fujiki River, visitors would find a spacious property with pavilions and annexes, where flowers bloomed year-round. During the Meiji era, Fujiya Ryokan, Itoya Ryokan, Nakanishi Ryokan, and Amanoya were said to have formed a beautiful landscape with their main buildings, annexes, and other structures nestled amidst rich natural surroundings and gardens.

Known as the “inner retreat of Takayama,” Hida-Furukawa is a charming town lined with traditional townhouses, white-walled storehouses, and the Setogawa River where carp swim. Our Accommodation has been welcoming guests here for over 180 years.
