Shuzenji, where Shuzenji Onsen Yukaido Kikuya is located, is a historic Onsen town steeped in legends related to Kobo Daishi. The current Kikuya was once referred to as an annex. It is said that there was also a three-story main building at the time. Even the renowned author Natsume Soseki stayed in the main building. Back then, Kikuya owned approximately 40 to 45 cho (hectares) of forest land, and there were generations of mountain keepers. Additionally, there were always about 20 craftsmen, including gardeners, plasterers, and carpenters. At that time, many landscaping projects were undertaken, such as creating rest areas for guests who stayed for extended periods, which required such a workforce. During the era of the main building, there was a grand banquet hall called Kikuya Sanso, boasting an astonishing number of tatami mats.
"LOG," located halfway up the slope leading to Senkoji Temple in Onomichi, is a Property that has been transformed from an apartment built in 1963 into a multi-purpose Facility in collaboration with the Indian architectural group Studio Mumbai. The third floor, which houses the Rooms, is exclusively for guests and features a library inspired by the study of Bijoy Jain. Both types of Rooms incorporate handmade Japanese paper by Wataru Hatano, allowing guests to enjoy a unique stay with experiences such as the shifting light filtering through shoji screens and the distinctive "sounds" of Onomichi from outside the windows. This building was originally a village headman's house where ancestors lived since 1842 (Tenpo 13). Within the premises, there is a nagaya-mon gate, main house, rice storehouse, and garden that have been preserved for 200 years. The rice storehouse, designated as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property, was renovated in 2005 to start a French restaurant. The owner is the 8th generation here. With the desire to preserve it unchanged for the next 200 years and to offer a complete hospitality experience to our guests, we have built a property on the mountain behind.
