A tranquil village surrounded by stunning rocky mountains, tea fields, and just a few farmhouses. Right in front of the Property lies the beautiful Makihara Valley. Located slightly away from the Onsen town, this Property blends seamlessly with the rural landscape. Amid this mysterious and soothing scenery stands Hazu Gassho. On the 1,000-tsubo grounds along the valley, there are two gassho-style buildings, a garden, open-air baths, and walking paths. As you proceed through the garden, descend the stone-paved path, and step inside, you will find a spacious entrance, lobby, dining area, and fireplace, all harmoniously showcasing the beauty of Japanese architecture. Beyond the veranda, the lush green valley awaits. You will feel as though time flows gently with the history within every corner of the Property.

Our highly acclaimed kaiseki cuisine is carefully crafted dish by dish, featuring blessings from the land of Hira’s famed pure waters, delicacies from Lake Biwa, and carefully selected seafood delivered directly from nearby waters. An Onsen Ryokan perched on a hill overlooking Lake Biwa, with the added convenience of being just about 20 minutes from Kyoto. Our top recommendation is a guest room with an open-air bath and sweeping views of Lake Biwa. Enjoy a blissful soak in a variety of tubs, including glossy enamel-style baths, wooden baths filled with the scent of timber, and gently rounded ceramic baths. In addition, the new Facility “Wayu Yamaboshi” has opened, offering easy ways to experience Japanese games and culture. This hands-on space blends tradition with fun to make your trip even more memorable.
The owner's deep passion for fishing led him to become a fisherman in this area, drawn by the natural beauty of Lake Biwa and Makino Town, while also running this accommodation. The space features handmade interiors crafted from driftwood from Lake Biwa, creating a sophisticated design that harmonizes with nature. From the second-floor living room and the bath made of cypress and granite, you can enjoy stunning views of tree-lined scenery that changes with each season. For dinner, savor dishes from a long-established restaurant in a calm, hotel-like atmosphere. We offer a serene and refined stay designed for adults seeking tranquility and quality.
The symphony of Nagara River and Mount Kinka, gentle sunlight, and the smile of flowers. Gifu Grand Hotel. A day by the Nagara River begins slowly. Before you lies the Nagara River, Mount Kinka, and Gifu Castle.
“Sawando” means “a place where rivers meet.” In December 1998, Onsen water was brought to this area—long used as a gateway to Kamikochi—and Sawando Onsen was born. Our inn opened five years later, in July 2003. Surrounded by mountains and little else, Keiryuso Shiorie warmly welcomes you. We hope you will enjoy the nature, unwind from everyday fatigue, celebrate an anniversary with someone special, or treat yourself for all your hard work—we would be truly happy if you choose Shiorie for moments like these.
Our inn is located at the foot of Shirakami-Sanchi, a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site, offering a perfect location to enjoy beautiful mountains and Onsen. For meals, savor local seasonal ingredients carefully selected by our chef, such as "lamb meat" and "Iwana sashimi," along with Akita's traditional dishes like "Kiritanpo." The nearby "Yunosawa Onsen" features a unique texture and rare mineral composition that is rich in moisturizing properties, providing a rejuvenating experience for your tired body.
Mount Akagi, one of Japan's 100 Famous Mountains, is located about two hours from the city center. From the windows of Aoki Ryokan, which has been in operation on Mount Akagi since 1875, you can enjoy a panoramic view of Lake Onuma and the highest peak, Mount Kurohime. Witness the mountains reflected upside down on the mirror-like calm surface of Lake Onuma after the morning mist clears, the stunning sight of Mount Kurohime bathed in the red hues of sunset, and the star-filled night sky against the pitch-black backdrop. The retro-style interior of the Ryokan, built with natural wood from Mount Akagi, exudes warmth and offers a tranquil atmosphere. Meals prepared with locally sourced ingredients are crafted by a seasoned chef, featuring specialties such as smelt, Joshu pork, sashimi konjac, mountain vegetables in spring, mushrooms in autumn, hearty winter hot pots, and salt-grilled sweetfish and trout, all of which are popular choices. The main building offers a variety of Japanese-style Rooms, a 70-tatami mat banquet hall, a panoramic bath overlooking Lake Onuma, and a "dining area" with sunken kotatsu-style seating for dinner. Breakfast is served at "Restaurant Numajiri," where you can enjoy the view of Lake Onuma. Next to the restaurant, there is a shop selling souvenirs and beverages. Across the parking lot, on the lakeshore, is a private cottage-style annex called "Jurin," where you can relax and sleep comfortably in a bed. The water flowing through the Ryokan's taps is all natural spring water drawn from the mountains. The baths heated with this spring water are known for their smooth texture and warming effect. Additionally, rice cooked with this soft, cold water and drip coffee made with it are highly praised for their unique taste.Located at an altitude of 1,350 meters, the shores of Lake Onuma are about 10°C cooler than the city center, making it an ideal summer retreat, often referred to as "the entire mountain is air-conditioned." In winter, the area experiences cold temperatures comparable to Hokkaido, and Lake Onuma becomes a rare spot in the Kanto region for ice fishing for smelt. From September to November, boat fishing is also available. Fishing equipment, boats, and tents can be rented from Aoki Ryokan's "Fishing Support Boat Service."Mount Akagi features two caldera lakes, Lake Onuma and Lake Konuma, as well as the high-altitude marshland of Kakumanbuchi. Peaks such as Mount Kurohime, Mount Jizo, Mount Suzuga, and Mount Arayama offer breathtaking views. Birds flit among the trees, including birch, Erman's birch, and Mizunara oak, filling the air with their songs. Well-maintained hiking and walking trails allow visitors to enjoy the natural beauty of the area throughout the seasons. Snow-covered Mount Akagi is also ideal for beginners in winter mountain climbing. Whether it's the silver-white winter, the lush green summer, the red azaleas of spring, or the vibrant autumn foliage, Mount Akagi offers a unique charm in every season. There is nothing but abundant nature here. It is our joy to provide a place where you can relax and enjoy the beauty of Mount Akagi. We warmly invite you to visit Aoki Ryokan, a lakeside Property on Mount Akagi. All of our staff look forward to welcoming you.
Deep in the mountains of Gifu, this is Okuhida. "Something special... While there may not be anything fancy here, there are countless things you won't find in the city." Things not found in the city. These are likely the things that many people living in urban areas forget or fail to notice in their daily lives. Here in Okuhida, such special things overflow in everyday life, shining brightly. Not by the calendar, but by the rhythm of daily life, you can feel the seasons change. During your time here, such "special things" will quietly and gently seep into your body... peacefully, at your own pace.
