The location is believed to be the site of Emperor Kanmu's Oi Imperial Villa, which he frequently visited during his reign (781-806), as referenced in "Nihon Kiryaku." (An excavation conducted on our premises in 1988 uncovered remains of a garden from the early Heian period, suggesting a high possibility that this was the site of Emperor Kanmu's Oi Imperial Villa.) In "The Tale of Genji," Chapter 18 "Matsukaze," written in the mid-Heian period, a residence near the Oi River serves as the setting.
