Mikuni Minato is a historic port town mentioned in the Shoku Nihongi in 778. During the Edo period, it flourished as a port of call for Kitamaebune trading ships traveling between Osaka and Hokkaido. Ten traditional townhouses scattered throughout the area have been renovated into nine buildings with 16 guest rooms and a restaurant. The name “Homachi” comes from “homachi” (waiting for favorable winds), a term that also evokes the “reward” enjoyed in the era of Kitamaebune ships. The architecture features local kagura-style construction and preserves Edo-period pillars, beams, and Shakudani stone. Dining is created by Michelin-starred French chef Ken Yoshino, who crafts an original menu showcasing Fukui’s world-class ingredients such as Echizen crab—also presented to the Imperial Household—rare seafood varieties, and Wakasa beef.
