Facing the Sea of Japan, Tango–Kumihama is a scenic area where many beautiful landscapes remain. A legend has been passed down here. In the Kamakura period, the monk Ippen traveled across The whole country to save people, distributing nembutsu talismans and performing dancing nembutsu. After finishing his preaching in Kyoto and heading toward San’in, he was chanting the nembutsu in Kumihama when clouds suddenly gathered and a blue dragon appeared over the sea. Dragon worship has long been practiced in this region, and it is said that the blue dragon revealed itself before Ippen to form a bond with the nembutsu. Even today, the Sea of Japan as seen from Kumihama retains an air of mystery. Like Ippen once did, you can be embraced by this scenery and find rest here.

Our 8,000-tsubo garden, begun by my great-grandfather in the early Showa era, is surrounded by trees over 100 years old and is a celebrated spot in Otaru, with 200 cherry trees in full bloom in early May. From late May through June, wisteria trellises and azaleas follow, and in summer you can enjoy viburnum snowballs, hydrangeas, and carefully tended roses. I especially love the autumn foliage in late October, and the deep winter snow that transforms everything into a pure white landscape is equally refreshing for the soul.
Hatsuhana has renovated all guest rooms to include open-air baths and added four private baths with different themes, reopening on Sunday, September 11, 2022.

Guests can enjoy painting on Raku ware, and the gallery inside the facility displays over 3,000 works by prominent figures from various fields. In addition to the open-air bath on the first floor, there is a private open-air bath on the third floor for complete privacy, and an observation open-air bath on the eighth floor offering views of the Zao mountain range to the east. Our cuisine highlights the local flavors of Yamagata, with specialties such as Yonezawa Beef steak, sukiyaki, Onsen-steamed shabu-shabu, and Yamagata's famous imoni stew, all of which are highly popular.
Dogo Onsen, Japan’s oldest hot spring with a history of around 3,000 years, has long been celebrated as one of the nation’s finest. It has been praised in poetry under names such as “Nigitatsu no Iwayu” and “Iyo no Yuketa.” Funaya Ryokan (today’s “Funaya”) opened here during the Kan’ei era of the Edo period. For more than 390 years since, it has continued to be cherished as a lodging for countless travelers. Dogo is mentioned in ancient works such as the Nihon Shoki and the Manyoshu, but it was Natsume Soseki’s novel Botchan that made its name widely known. The haiku “Hajimete no Funaya-domari o shigurekeri” was composed when Soseki stayed here in the autumn of 1893, the year he arrived in Matsuyama to teach. Funaya Ryokan has also been favored by literary figures connected to Matsuyama, including Masaoka Shiki and Takahama Kyoshi. At Dogo Onsen Funaya, you can enjoy a vast garden of approximately 1,500 tsubo (about 5,000 m²), complete with a flowing stream. Throughout the property, we have carefully blended traditional charm with a fresh sense of renewal. Please savor an unforgettable moment on your journey.
