The mixed-gender open-air bath "Taki no Yu," the only one in Kurokawa Onsen selected as one of Japan's Top 100 Secret Hot Springs, offers not only exceptional water quality but also a sense of traditional Japanese onsen charm. The nostalgic property features 13 different onsens, allowing guests to enjoy a variety of baths within the accommodation.

A long-established Property located on the slopes of Mount Eboshi, one of the five peaks of Mount Aso, preserving the Jigoku Onsen which first opened in 1803. Stepping into the main building, which is over 100 years old and has been renovated after the Kumamoto Earthquake, feels like entering a different world, as if traveling back in time. The Onsen features three different sources, offering 11 baths across four locations, each with unique water qualities and atmospheres. Guests can enjoy the "Suzume no Yu," a "miraculous bath" rich in sulfur content with water bubbling up from the ground, as well as the highly acidic "Moto no Yu" and "Tamago no Yu," choosing baths based on their benefits and purposes. For dinner, a variety of courses are available, including seasonal hot pots, irori hearth dishes, and Kyoto-style kaiseki cuisine. Our Onsen facilities include separate indoor baths for men and women, a mixed-gender indoor bath, and a mixed-gender open-air bath. There are three different spring sources. You can enjoy three distinct types of Onsen. Magoroku Onsen Rokuan is a rare village-style Ryokan, with buildings separated into individual lodges. It may not feel luxurious in every way, but because you will often step outside, you can experience Magoroku’s great nature directly. The stillness of summer nights, the beauty of the morning sun, and the cool breeze. There are experiences and moments of awe that can only be found here. We have six Rooms in total; each Room accommodates up to two guests for a relaxing stay. Our dining area is counter-style and is the only place where all guests gather at once. Known as the last onsen of Kanto, this property is located deep in the mountains, surrounded by pristine nature. To reach the property, you can either hike along a trail or use the dedicated shuttle service. The guest rooms, newly opened in 2023, feature private open-air baths, offering a secluded and intimate space. Additionally, there are two mixed-gender baths and a women-only open-air bath, providing an exceptional onsen experience amidst the sounds and scents of nature. The cuisine, boasting the use of seasonal local ingredients, is also a highlight.

A keyaki-wood Onsen Ryokan—beloved by Kenji Miyazawa and Torahiko Tamiya—crafted entirely from zelkova, a style that can no longer be recreated today. The historic Namari Onsen, first opened around 600 years ago, offers exceptionally high-quality waters recognized by selections such as “New Japan’s 100 Famous Hot Springs,” “Japan’s 100 Famous Hot Springs,” and “Japan’s Onsen Heritage.” Unusually even among well-known hot spring areas, the property has five source springs, and all four baths on site are luxurious 100% free-flowing natural spring water (kakenagashi). It is also known as “Namari-no-Yu,” featured in Kenji Miyazawa’s masterpiece *The Bears of Nametoko Mountain*, making this a special Accommodation where the story’s world and a historic Onsen come together. In 2025, the main building—of outstanding historical value—was designated a National Registered Tangible Cultural Property, allowing you to fully enjoy the beauty of traditional Japanese architecture as well. In particular, we highly recommend the 100% natural self-springing rock bath “Hakuen-no-Yu,” said to be Japan’s deepest—a superb bath that warms you through to your core.

The history of Ryokan Chōraku-en Yunosuke at Tamatsukuri Onsen is the history of Tamatsukuri Onsen itself. Tamatsukuri Onsen was established in the early Nara period by our ancestor, Hasegawa Toshikata. During the Edo period, the Hasegawa family was entrusted with the management of Tamatsukuri Onsen by the Matsue domain, holding the official title of "Yunosuke." In the first year of the Meiji era, they began operating a ryokan under the name Chōraku-en. For 140 years, they have had the honor of hosting numerous literary figures, dignitaries, and occasionally members of the imperial family.
