The location is believed to be the site of Emperor Kanmu's Oi Imperial Villa, which he frequently visited during his reign (781-806), as referenced in "Nihon Kiryaku." (An excavation conducted on our premises in 1988 uncovered remains of a garden from the early Heian period, suggesting a high possibility that this was the site of Emperor Kanmu's Oi Imperial Villa.) In "The Tale of Genji," Chapter 18 "Matsukaze," written in the mid-Heian period, a residence near the Oi River serves as the setting. This residence is described as being located "nearby Oigawa," and it is believed to have been modeled after Emperor Kanmu's Oi Imperial Villa.
