The Akakura Kanko Resort Hotel was founded in 1937 (Showa 12). Built by the Okura Zaibatsu following the Kamikochi Imperial Hotel and Kawana Hotel, it is a pioneer among Japan's Resort Hotels. The Hotel is located at an altitude of 1,000 meters, where a sea of clouds can sometimes be seen below. In addition to the timeless charm since its founding, all rooms and the Japanese restaurant were renovated in 2008. Furthermore, on December 12, 2009, a large public bath with open-air baths, a spa salon, and guest rooms with open-air Onsen were newly opened. Dogo Onsen, Japan's oldest Onsen with a history of approximately 3,000 years, has been celebrated as one of the nation's most renowned hot springs, even mentioned in poems such as "Shiratama no Ishiyu" and "Iyo no Yuketa." Funaya Ryokan (now known as "Funaya") opened here during the Kan'ei era of the Edo period. For over 390 years, it has been cherished as a beloved Property for countless travelers. Dogo Onsen, which appears in ancient texts like the "Nihon Shoki" and "Manyoshu," was made decisively famous by Natsume Soseki's novel "Botchan." The haiku, "Hajimete no Funaya tomari wo shigure keri," was composed in the autumn of 1893 when Soseki stayed at Funaya during his first year as a teacher in Matsuyama. Funaya Ryokan has also been a favorite Property of literary figures connected to Matsuyama, such as Masaoka Shiki and Takahama Kyoshi. At "Dogo Onsen Funaya," you can enjoy a vast garden of approximately 1,500 tsubo (about 4,950 square meters) with a flowing mountain stream. The Property has been meticulously crafted to harmonize the charm of tradition with a fresh, modern spirit. Please savor a memorable moment of your journey with us.

"Tobira," an intriguing name that evokes mystery, brings to mind phrases like "The Door of Truth" or "The Door of Beauty." Nestled in the untouched embrace of mountains and the Usukawa Valley, Tobira Onsen lies beyond Tobira Pass, as if hiding life's happiness. Located southeast of Matsumoto City, it sits at an elevation of approximately 1,050 meters. In spring, vibrant red azaleas bloom amidst lush greenery, reflecting the simplicity and sincerity of human nature.During summer, visitors seeking cool retreats or hiking adventures to Utsukushigahara and Mount Hachibuse bring a lively atmosphere to the tranquil valley. Yet even then, quiet rooms with refreshing breezes attract those who come for peaceful reading.Autumn transforms the mountains into a fiery display of crimson leaves—an enchanting scene reminiscent of Bonnard's paintings. I also cherish winter in Tobira. Resting by a kotatsu after reading for hours while listening to the gentle sound of mountain streams creates moments where distant murmurs or songs seem almost real—a delightful illusion.Though I do not drink alcohol myself, I imagine that sharing sake with close friends around a kotatsu during winter at Tobira Onsen must be extraordinary. Tobira is a haven for hardworking individuals and their families—a place for warmth and joyful gatherings. It remains untouched by those who view Onsen merely as places for indulgence without deeper appreciation.
