A long-established Ryokan in Kotohira, once visited by Emperor Showa, has reopened after renovation.
"Toraya Annex," built in the late Edo period as a special residence of the approximately 400-year-old Toraya Ryokan. The interior has been renovated for your comfort, while preserving its nostalgic atmosphere and historical charm. The entire accommodation is non-smoking, and shared spaces are available. The Chrysanthemum Room, where Emperor Showa stayed
This is the room where His Imperial Highness the Crown Prince stayed during his visit to the prefecture in 1950. The room features gold-leaf sliding doors, black earthen walls, and restored luxurious fittings and interiors from that time. Artworks by Kuniaki Wada and a tiger scroll said to be painted by a disciple of Okyo Maruyama are displayed, along with other tiger-themed art pieces. In a two-tatami-mat corner called "Musha Kakushi," there is a hanging bamboo blind, and the ceiling is adorned with phoenix carvings.
