Umekiya

This was our second stay at Umekiya. We stayed once before and it was so great that we chose it again.The owner talked with us about why we picked this place again, as well as products made on Awaji Island and shops run by local creators, and we were able to actually stop by. They also share recommended spots around Awaji Island.On our second visit, we used a nearby super sento.It was extremely crowded with locals, so while Umekiya doesn’t have a bathtub, if you want to take your time in the bath, it’s better to use Umekiya.The Wi‑Fi in the Room (which didn’t work well last time) had been improved, but the best part is spending time enjoying the atmosphere in the shared space on the first floor while having free drinks.There are two shared toilets, but my family wished they were separated for men and women. It’s also hard to tell whether someone is inside; even though one of them was vacant, I was knocked on and asked to hurry up. It would be helpful if it were easier to see whether each toilet is occupied or not.If we come back to Awaji Island again, this is a place we’d like to stay at.

We stayed here as a family. The toilets and washbasins are shared, but they are kept very clean. The bathing area is shared showers only, so it would be even better if there were a bathtub, but the heating is turned on even in winter. They also provided discount coupons for a nearby Onsen Facility and a towel set; at the Onsen Facility we had chances to interact with local people, who were very kind to our children. In the lobby there are drinks available anytime, as well as tables and chairs around a stove and some books—such a cozy space. We especially loved the book filled with photos of Awaji Island. For dinner, they recommended local restaurants within walking distance; the Spanish mackerel rice bowl was particularly delicious. On the first floor, there is a large shared tatami room with a projector and board games, so the kids enjoyed watching movies and playing Jenga. There is no TV in the Room, but thanks to all the thoughtful touches, it didn’t feel inconvenient at all. After the kids fell asleep, the adults were even able to have a small get-together. The futons were fluffy and we slept well. Breakfast was served in a private room with toys, and everything was carefully prepared and delicious. The children could play with the toys and relax as well. We truly appreciated how they arranged separate Rooms for us and kindly helped us with something we left behind. The owner and his wife were both very warm and wonderful people. We would love to stay again in another season.
