Our temple enshrines the secret Buddha statue of Fudo Myo-o, carved by Kobo Daishi Kukai. It is one of the 12 temples founded in Nishitani by High Priest Jiko in the year 906 (Engi 7) and is conveniently located on the southern side of the central area of Mount Koya for pilgrimage. The temple is also known as a family temple for the Yamashina-no-miya Imperial family and has been honored with the title "Yamashina Betsuin." Empress Bifukumon-in, wife of Emperor Toba, who was deeply devoted to Kobo Daishi, dedicated a gold-lettered Amida Sutra on indigo paper and an Amida Triad statue to our temple. Following her will, she was laid to rest here. At our temple, you can enjoy meals while admiring a serene and beautiful garden, participate in invigorating morning prayers, or experience ultimate tranquility unique to this historic site—away from public roads—through activities such as reading or sutra copying. Indulge yourself in an unparalleled healing experience that only a historical temple can offer.
