    More than 40 years ago, when I was a child, I stayed here with my mother, my older brother, and a family who were acquaintances of my mother. I could barely remember anything other than the name, but after all these years, I’m glad I was able to stay again—this time with my own family. The portions at both dinner and breakfast were very satisfying, and I was happy to have my favorite hoba miso.I love Gero, so if I have the chance, I’d like to stay again.

Yamagataya was established in the first year of the Bunka era during the Edo period. The relaxing space, cultivated over time with the desire that "those who visit Yamagataya feel more at ease than at home and return revitalized," is Yamagataya's greatest charm.

Enjoy the seasonal landscapes and fireworks.

Located along the Hida River (Masuda River) flowing through the center of Gero Onsen, you can enjoy the scenery that changes with the seasons. The Gero fireworks, held several times in summer and winter, can be viewed from within the facility.

Onsen Town
Enjoy the emotional atmosphere of Gero Onsen town in a yukata.

Our facility is located just a 1-2 minute walk from the Gero Onsen town, making it very convenient. You can change into stylish yukata and enjoy strolling through the Onsen town, exploring foot baths and galleries. The promenade along the Hida River under Yamagataya is also one of the attractions.

    Notice of Elevator Renovation (Replacement) Work at Taikanso

    Thank you very much for your continued patronage of Gero Onsen Yamagataya.
    To ensure our guests can stay with us safely and comfortably, we will be carrying out renovation (replacement) work on the “Taikanso Elevator” during the period below.

    We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. This work is necessary to maintain a safe and secure environment for all guests, and we kindly ask for your understanding.

    Taikanso has two elevators, and the work will be carried out one at a time, so the other elevator will remain available. (Please note that there will be two nights when both elevators will be completely out of service late at night.)

    However, operating with only one elevator may result in longer waiting times.
    During the construction period, you may also notice some noise and increased movement of construction personnel. We will prioritize guest safety and continue striving to improve our hospitality, and we appreciate your kind understanding and cooperation.




    - Construction period: Scheduled from Tuesday, November 24, 2026 to Thursday, December 17, 2026

    * Dates/times when both elevators will be stopped: From 1:00 a.m. to 5:00 a.m. on November 25 (starting at 1:00 a.m. on November 25) and from 1:00 a.m. to 5:00 a.m. on December 11
    During these complete shutdown hours, guests staying on Taikanso floors 9–11 are asked to use the stairs.
    Guests staying on Taikanso floors 5–8 should use the neighboring “Togawakaku” elevator. (Please note it does not go to Taikanso’s second floor.)

    * Guests staying on Taikanso floors 5–8 are asked to also use the Togawakaku elevator during this period.

    * Please understand that protective coverings such as walls or fencing may affect appearance.

    * Work that produces louder noise is scheduled between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., but some construction noise may still be heard at other times.

    - The schedule may change depending on weather or work conditions.
