A renowned Onsen praised by Sei Shonagon, healing both mind and body.

Sakakibara Onsen is located amidst the traditional rural landscapes of Japan, surrounded by satoyama, rice fields, and rivers. Locally known as "Miya no Yu," it is a historic Onsen where people are said to have purified themselves before visiting the shrine. Praised as a "famous spring" by the renowned Sei Shonagon, Sakakibara Onsen has been celebrated in many poems as a healing hot spring for love ailments. Even today, Sakakibara Onsen is cherished by many as a place to soothe both the mind and body. We warmly invite you to experience the renowned Onsen, endorsed by Sei Shonagon, along with our heartfelt hospitality.

  • This was my second stay. The waters of Sakakibara Onsen are truly exceptional—I've visited many Onsens, but this is the best for me. Including day trips, I come about once every two months.Sei Shonagon is a calm and charming Accommodation that retro Showa-era lovers will adore. The Facility is spotless, with thorough cleaning down to every detail. The meals are generous in portion, delicious, and carefully prepared—I really enjoy them. They also offer a great selection of Mie sake, and the tasting set is a great value and highly recommended: you can choose 3 or 5 types from around 10 options.Above all, the baths are outstanding, with a wonderful atmosphere. The staff are kind and always smiling. I’ve heard Sakakibara Onsen has become quieter than it used to be, but this is an Accommodation I never want to see disappear.I’d love to visit again during summer vacation—I’m already looking forward to it.If I may make a few requests: where possible, I would love for the women’s and men’s baths to be swapped monthly (even just once in a while), as the men’s bath looks lovely in photos and I’d really like to try it too. Also, I would appreciate having an electrical outlet in the Room for charging devices. And although it may be difficult to change, the stairs down to the bath area are steep and might be challenging for older guests—any measures you could take would be appreciated.Other than that, I was truly satisfied with everything. Thank you very much for such a wonderful stay.

  • A long-established Onsen Ryokan It has a nostalgic Showa-era feel. Although there was no information about the Onsen water quality in the bath area, it left my skin smooth and felt great. The Room has been nicely renovated and is very clean! The meals are average, but the rice is delicious.

In ancient times, the talented Sei Shonagon wrote in "The Pillow Book," "The hot springs are the Natsukuri no Yu..." indicating that the Onsen of Sakakibara has been cherished by people throughout the ages. It is especially known for its benefits for women's beauty, making it easy to understand why Sei Shonagon herself loved it. Locally, it has also been referred to as "Miya no Yu."
