  • A prior Review mentioned that there were many foreign staff, and it felt like most of the staff were non-Japanese. However, their Japanese was very good and the service was fine, so it didn’t bother me.Amenities are placed in the lobby and you take what you need yourself. They had plenty, including toner, makeup remover, shampoo, etc.You can drink coffee and tea for free at the cafe corner, which was a nice service. The meals were mainly Japanese cuisine and were delicious. Personally, I loved the stylish and cute small plates used for the dishes. The bath was pleasant too, but I felt there weren’t enough hair dryers. Especially for women who need more time to dry their hair, I ended up thinking I’d have to wait my turn… and that it might be faster to go back to my Room with wet hair and dry it there. The view from the Room was great and was the best part. The mountains and river looked beautiful—wonderful scenery.

  • Honestly, even though it was midweek, I felt there were surprisingly few guests and wondered if everything was okay. However, the Onsen was very relaxing, and both dinner and breakfast were delicious. The staff’s dedicated hospitality really came through—please keep up the great work. The coffee service before check-out was also a small but welcome touch.

Enjoy the great nature of Zao

The "Okama," a symbol of Zao, is a crater lake surrounded by Kumano-dake (1,840m), Katta-dake (1,758m), and Goshiki-dake, with a circumference of 1,080m. Its name, "Okama," comes from its pot-like shape. The emerald green waters of the lake exhibit a mystical beauty that changes moment by moment. In a depth survey conducted in 1968, the Okama was recorded to have a maximum depth of 27.6m, an average depth of 17.8m, a circumference of 1,080m, an east-west diameter of 325m, and a north-south diameter of 335m. Depending on the weather and sunlight, the color of the lake water changes, appearing emerald green, brown, or cobalt blue, which is why the Okama is also known as "Goshiki-numa" (Five-Colored Pond). Due to the highly acidic nature of the lake water, no living organisms can inhabit it. The water temperature drops to 2°C at a depth of several meters from the surface, but it increases at greater depths, forming a unique double thermal layer, making it a one-of-a-kind lake in the world.
