“Shinkawa Kikyouya no Yado” is a renovated late-Edo-period merchant house, quietly standing along the street that stretches west from the entrance to Kurashiki’s Bikan Historical Quarter. This area once flourished as a produce market, and Kikyouya was a merchant family dealing in grains. The “Merchant House Stay,” created by renovating the main house facing the street, restores the original first-floor layout and features a Japanese-style room overlooking a maple tree in the courtyard, a study making use of the attic space, and a bright bedroom with views up to the powerful roof framework. The “South Stay,” renovated from an annex on the south side of the property, is an open Japanese-style space that showcases exposed roof beams that have supported the building for more than 150 years.
