Nananohi Machiya House

The water areas have been fully renovated for comfort and functionality, featuring an open kitchen where you can cook and chat with your travel companions, and a bathroom with a bathtub made from Hida Takayama hinoki cypress. Cooking with local ingredients from the “Jinya-mae Morning Market,” held every morning at the nearby Takayama Jinya, will be a memorable part of your trip. This machiya townhouse was designed with inspiration from the master craftsmanship of Hida Shunkei lacquerware, which highlights the natural beauty of wood grain. The bathroom features an elegant round window that frames the courtyard garden like a painting, and the spacious Japanese-style room incorporates the distinctive tones of Hida Shunkei lacquer on its walls. The exterior is fully clad in cedar boards from Hida Takayama and finished with “gofun-nuri,” a traditional feature of Takayama machiya in which the tips of the supporting bracket arms under the eaves are painted white.

Takayama Jinya, the only remaining Edo-period government office, and the Old Town district of Hida-Takayama, lined with long-established shops and sake breweries, are just nearby. You can also enjoy the Takayama Festival in spring and autumn right by the traditional townhouses. From JR Takayama Station within walking distance, buses and trains provide excellent access to Shirakawa-go (a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its gassho-zukuri thatched-roof houses), as well as the Shinhotaka Ropeway and Kamikochi, where you can take in breathtaking natural scenery.
