A harmonious blend of restored traditional charm and modern comfort – A private retreat on a Seto Inland Sea island

Suo-Oshima, Yamaguchi Prefecture. Quietly nestled in a Setouchi townscape, WAKUSUI is an Accommodation limited to one group per day. Beyond the wooden gate lies a cozy traditional home where families with children can relax and take their time. This 150+ year-old kominka has been carefully restored—authentic materials and a historic setting nurture children’s senses, while adults find nostalgia and gentle healing that slowly eases the mind. Preserving the original beams and posts, we thoughtfully designed the space with naguri-finished flooring and kumiko woodwork, filled with “the beauty of Japan we want our children to experience.” As an entire-house rental for up to 10 guests—with a kids’ Room and even a hidden Room—you can enjoy your stay without worrying about anyone else, like an old-fashioned extended family with grandparents, parents, and children together. A kominka is a warm place where people gather and connect. We welcome you naturally—just like home.

Introduction of the Accommodation

Welcome back.

A traditional Japanese house has long been a welcoming, comfortable place where people gather.

Exterior

Spend time with the islands of the Seto Inland Sea.

A private, one-group-per-day Accommodation renovated from a 150+ year-old residence, quietly nestled in a nostalgic setting that makes you want to say, “I’m home.” On an approximately 800 m² property, you can enjoy an approximately 180 m² space where the traditional house wing and the guest wing stand side by side—exclusively for your group. A unique experience of living as if in a rural town, unlike resorts or tourist destinations. A private whole-house stay where you can slowly savor everyday life on a Setouchi island. Japanese elegance is found in valuing simplicity and authenticity—embracing natural materials, Japanese design, and a sense of history. Spending time with the people who matter most in this uniquely refined space is true luxury that gently fills the heart. Set out on a journey with your children, grandchildren, and loved ones to rediscover the value and beauty of a traditional Japanese home.

Living Room

Dynamic beams over 150 years old

For example, for families with children: after the children have gone to sleep, the dining area is designed so adults can gather together while still keeping an eye on the Accommodation building. At night, illuminated beams create a magical atmosphere and set the scene for adult time.

A Longevity Celebration for Three Generations

Ideal for celebrating longevity milestones such as Kanreki (60th birthday), Koki (70th), and Sanju (80th). Families—children and grandchildren alike—can gather all at once. Traditional Japanese houses have long been comfortable places for large groups to spend time together. The accommodation building has two bedrooms, and the 12-tatami Japanese-style room in the traditional house building can also be used for sleeping, offering a well-balanced sense of privacy. *If you are staying to celebrate a longevity milestone, please let us know in the remarks section when making your Reservation. We will prepare the decor colors accordingly (red, purple, yellow, etc.).

Course Meal
Course meals (creative course or sushi course) available for families with children

Wakumi’s course dining is built around the service concept, “Relax with your children.” To ensure even families with young children can enjoy a luxurious time, the dining area includes a kids’ room and an adjacent Japanese-style room where children can play freely. You can also watch videos in the mini theater room in the Accommodation building. After finishing their meal, children can spend time freely without worrying about others, while adults enjoy the course at a relaxed pace together as you look out over the illuminated garden. In addition, our “Sushi Course,” limited to four groups per month, includes kids’ support: drink service is handled by experienced moms who gently assist during mealtime.

Japanese Design for Children to Experience

We designed this space with great care for the unique textures of Japanese materials, hoping that children surrounded by new things every day can spend time here while appreciating the beauty of traditional Japanese design.

Ferry
A pre-breakfast ferry ride with the morning sun

To stay here is to experience the morning. To help you truly feel the sunrise, we began by searching for an east-facing traditional house. Wake with the morning sun, then take a walk to the pier. Enjoy a 45-minute boat ride on a real local route still used in daily life. Return to the Accommodation at 8:00 and have breakfast. A simple yet deeply satisfying way to start the day—welcoming the sunrise and sea breeze from the boat in the morning.
