Enjoy the view of azure waves and island chains, and the ambiance of a mountain retreat.

On the way up the stone steps leading to Senkoji Temple, there stands a Western-style house surrounded by a unique scratch tile wall with a textured and shadowed appearance. Known as the Shimai Residence, its name originates from the wealthy merchant Shimai, who owned this land during the Meiji era. Built in 1931 (Showa 6), the house features elements of pseudo-Western architecture, such as the earth-toned mortar-washed exterior walls, a round window by the entrance, and the arched pillars of the second-floor balcony. While the exterior retains its original charm, the interior has been renovated to create a relaxing space for families and friends. The renovation preserved historical beams and pillars and incorporated natural materials, such as Seto plaster made with powdered oyster shells.

The spacious first-floor living room features scattered pillars that retain their original architectural charm, evoking a sense of traditional Japanese aesthetics, and impressive sturdy beams. On the west side, where there was once a storehouse, an open atrium space unfolds. From the second-floor balcony, you can view Mukojima and the Onomichi Channel directly. This is a relaxing space harmonizing Japanese and Western styles, past and present. In the west Room, we have prepared an original bench made from Bingo Kasuri fabric and locally sourced igusa grass to let you experience the Setouchi lifestyle.

Exterior
Enjoy the Onomichi Channel from the terrace at Shimaitei 'Nozomi'.

From the balcony of the Shimaikyotei Western-style building, you can enjoy the view of Onomichi from the eastern half of the building, named "Nozomi" to accommodate small groups or long-term stays.
