One of the attractions of Kita-Karuizawa is that you can avoid the traffic and congestion of Karuizawa. During major holidays, exiting at Usui-Karuizawa Interchange can lead to massive traffic jams where walking might be faster. The usual 15-minute drive from Usui-Karuizawa to Karuizawa Station can take over 3 hours. Below are recommended routes, but please check road conditions in advance: 1. Head north on the Kan-Etsu Expressway, exit at Shibukawa-Ikaho Interchange, and head south via the Jobu Road and Yamba Bypass. 2. Head north on the Kan-Etsu Expressway, exit at Takasaki Interchange, and take Route 406 through the Nidoage Pass (a mountain road) to avoid traffic. ー By Train ー The nearest stations are "Karuizawa" on the Nagano side and "Naganohara-Kusatsuguchi" on the Gunma side.
