Enjoy history and the blessings of Tamba-Sasayama at the birthplace of Botan Nabe Accommodation
Located in the heart of the Tamba-Sasayama castle town, Chikamata is a culinary Ryokan founded in 1609 with over 400 years of history. Many notable figures have visited throughout the ages, and it remains an Accommodation cherished by guests to this day. For sightseeing, Sasayama Castle Ruins (Oshoin) and the Kawaramachi Tsumairi Merchant Houses are within walking distance. The convenient location also puts you about a 20-minute drive from Imada, home of Tanba ware, and the popular Fukusumi area. In addition, many prestigious golf clubs are scattered within about 40 minutes by car, making us an ideal base for golfers. Our cuisine centers on our signature “Botan Nabe” made with premium loin meat. In spring and summer, we serve seasonal kaiseki featuring nature’s bounty; in autumn, we offer luxurious kaiseki featuring Japanese matsutake as well as locally harvested Sasayama matsutake. We are always particular about ingredients, selecting mainly wild-caught and locally sourced items so you can truly savor nature’s gifts. We offer six Rooms, each with its own distinct style. Please choose and make a Reservation for the Room that best suits your preferences. As we are not a large Ryokan, we hope you will relax at your own pace and unwind from everyday fatigue. About 1 hour and 20 minutes by car from Osaka, Kyoto, or Nara—Tamba-Sasayama feels closer than you might expect. When visiting the area, we warmly invite you to stay with us at Tamba-Sasayama Chikamata; our staff looks forward to welcoming you.

Introduction of the Accommodation

Our signature specialty: Botan hot pot
The botan nabe (wild boar hot pot) once enjoyed here by His Imperial Highness Crown Prince Naruhito remains our signature specialty and is said to have originated at our Accommodation. In addition to botan nabe, you can savor seasonal kaiseki cuisine that fully showcases the local flavors and charms of each season. Our prized botan nabe uses only wild boar raised on the bounty of Sasayama’s mountains. Coated in a secret miso blend perfected through years of research by our 10th-generation proprietor, it pairs beautifully with the meat’s rich flavor and perfectly balanced fat—enjoy the deep umami that fills your mouth.

Hospitality rooted in a 400-year tradition dating back to the era of Ieyasu.
Tamba-Sasayama has been home to people since the Jomon and Yayoi periods. In 1609, the famed Sasayama Castle was built, and the town flourished as a castle town. The inn “Omiya,” founded at that time, is the origin of today’s “Chikamata.” The head of the house has inherited the name “Omiya Matabei” for generations, now in its 15th generation. The central staircase inside this Ryokan and the ceiling above the entrance remain as they were at the time of its founding. You can also see a holly tree planted to commemorate Crown Prince Hiro-no-miya’s stay, along with a wooden staircase preserved since opening—offering a touch of history and romance.
