A “stayable folk craft museum” at Jōhana Betsuin Zentokuji, where the essentials of everyday life are made.
A land nourished by abundant water: the Tonami region in western Toyama Prefecture. Philosopher Soetsu Yanagi once called the power created by nature and people together “dotoku” (the virtue of the land), and found in this region’s way of life an expression of the Mingei movement. Moribitosha, inspired by dotoku, is a gathering place for shaping a beautiful way of living for the future. A former training hall designed by Yanagi’s close disciple Keiichi Yasukawa has been renovated to include an auditorium, a Hotel, a café and shop, and telework spaces. Join classes and activities, talk with others, stay overnight, enjoy tea, settle in for a longer workation or creative retreat, and connect with local residents—so that your time here becomes learning itself and nourishment for everyday life. In a space filled with Mingei beauty, let’s think together about how we want to live beautifully from here on.

Introduction of the Accommodation

This Accommodation is a renovated former training hall, quietly set within the grounds of Jōhana Betsuin Zentoku-ji Temple, with a 550-year history. Designed by architect Keiichi Yasukawa, a devoted disciple of Sōetsu Yanagi—the founder of the Mingei (folk craft) movement—this space offers a stay where you can experience the “dotoku,” the spiritual character and cultural climate of the land associated with Shikō Munakata and Kanjiro Kawai.

The building is a rare and valuable piece of architecture that served as the prototype for the Matsumoto Folk Art Museum. Inside the property and guest rooms, beautiful folk crafts from different eras and regions are thoughtfully displayed. Surrounded by beauty, enjoy a rich and inspiring stay that will nourish your life to come.

As an exclusive privilege for guests, you may join the morning service (Oasa-ji) held in the main hall of Zentoku-ji Temple. Enjoy a special stay that lets you immerse yourself in temple life, including a quiet stroll through the grounds, a special viewing that includes normally closed areas, and a workcation in the study hall.
