An Onsen Accommodation where you can enjoy the thatched-roof bath hut “Tamago-yu” and seven natural hot springs

Takayu Onsen in Fukushima Prefecture, counted among the three famous hot springs of Oshu. Ryokan Tamagoyu boasts 100% natural hot spring water flowing continuously for 400 years. Enjoy seven hot springs, including the thatched-roof bathhouse from the Meiji era and the open-air bath that turns milky white, along with the changing seasons.

  • Thank you very much for taking such wonderful care of us.We were able to fully enjoy the outstanding quality of the Onsen at Tamago-yu. The milky white sulfur spring felt surprisingly gentle—hard to believe it is strongly acidic—and wrapped our bodies softly. It was a truly special Onsen that made us want to soak again and again. We felt that being able to enjoy such wonderful baths so comfortably is thanks to everyone who carefully cleans and manages the Accommodation each day. We sincerely appreciate your thoughtful attention, even in ways guests cannot see.We would love to visit again in a different season. Thank you very much.

  • The old-fashioned bath at Tamago-yu was simple and pleasantly nostalgic. The private open-air bath was also great. However, the outdoor pipes supplying the Onsen were made of plastic and felt cheap. It might be more atmospheric if they were covered with wooden framing or similar materials. The meals were a bit too large, and I couldn’t finish everything. It might be better to offer slightly smaller portions with a lower price. The menu itself had a nice local character. Most disappointing was that the lobby and hallways felt too cheap and didn’t match the quality of the Onsen.I felt the staff training was well done.

Introduction of the Accommodation

Hot spring tour

Hot spring tour

Within the garden, there are seven types of baths, including the thatched-roof Onsen hut and footbath, offering a rich variety. Each bath, featuring the renowned Tenjureisen hot spring and surrounded by the natural beauty of the mountains, provides a sense of tranquility to the heart. The thatched-roof Onsen hut within the garden has preserved its original form for over 140 years since the establishment of our inn. The abundant spring water flows naturally, without any added water or heat. This sulfur spring is named "Tamago-yu" (Egg Bath) because it leaves the skin as smooth as an egg and has a scent reminiscent of boiled eggs.

Unchanged for 140 years...

140 years unchanged...

Around the Keicho era, a hunter named Goemon Shishido, who lived in Futagozuka at the foot of the mountain, ventured into the mountains and saw billowing steam rising. Climbing further, he discovered a streamside covered in pure white mineral deposits. This is said to be the origin of Takayu Onsen. Later, a charcoal burner named Bungo suffered severe burns and, as an experiment, bathed in this hot spring, which completely healed him without leaving a trace. This miraculous spring was left to flow freely for a long time, but in the first year of the Meiji era, Kojiro Goto, the village head of Niwasaka, built a temporary hut to provide the spring for bathing, aiming to help people suffering from serious illnesses. This marked the first step in the establishment of Tamagoyu, and since then, both the temperature and the quality of the spring have remained unchanged to this day.

    Lunch Menu Information

Thank you very much for your continued patronage of Tamagoyu Ryokan.

We offer a lunch menu that you can enjoy alongside our day-use bathing.

Our top recommendation is the “Tamagoyu Tantan Udon.”
With the rich, mellow flavor of sesame and a pleasantly spicy kick, it’s one of our most popular dishes—perfect after warming up in the Onsen.

We also offer a variety of other options, including soba and udon, so please feel free to stop by.

All of our staff look forward to welcoming you.
