A hidden Ryokan for adults with a proud 100-year history. Experience the charm of Shinshu and the natural Onsen flowing directly from the source, accompanied by heartfelt hospitality.

Nakadanaso was founded in 1898. A secluded Accommodation in Komoro, Shinshu, with ties to the literary master Toson Shimazaki. Inspired by the founder’s vision, the building is wooden throughout, offering the warmth of natural timber. Our natural Onsen, fed directly from our own source and flowing freely, is known for its gentle, silky feel and skin-beautifying qualities. Guided by the belief, “Is there not a way to make oneself more fresh—and more simple?”, we welcome you with heartfelt hospitality. Leave the bustle of everyday life behind and enjoy a relaxing stay as you reflect on history and savor the nostalgic charm of Shinshu.

  • After touring the Komoro Distillery, we walked from Komoro Station to this Ryokan. The website said it was a 20-minute walk, but it took us about 30 minutes. We took a taxi on the way back. At the front desk, we were served plum soda and then shown to our Room. This time we stayed in a Room with a private indoor Onsen bath. It was a bit old, but very clean and well maintained. There is also a large public bath, but it is up quite a steep stone staircase, and my husband said it would be safer to use the bath in our Room instead—so we did. The Onsen left our skin feeling wonderfully smooth. I have had dinner at many Ryokan over the years, but every dish here was truly delicious. You could call it creative Japanese cuisine—both the presentation and flavors were excellent. They served salt-grilled ayu (sweetfish). I usually give ayu to my husband because of all the bones, but they told us you can even eat the bones in the head here, so I tried it for the first time—and really didn’t notice any bones at all. Because the food was so good, we also enjoyed it with their sake tasting set. Having an in-room bath meant we could enjoy it whenever we liked, which was wonderful. Breakfast included barley rice with grated yam (mugi-toro), grilled fish, ginger-flavored Onsen egg, and many other dishes—we enjoyed everything. A taxi to Komoro Station costs 1,000 yen, which is much better than walking for 30 minutes. It made me want to visit Komoro again next time as well.

  • It was a very charming accommodation. I stayed here when visiting a friend living in Komoro. Since we planned to have dinner at a restaurant run by my friend's relatives, I opted for the breakfast-only plan. The onsen, with its slightly warm temperature, was extremely comfortable during the hot weather, and I could enjoy soaking in the open-air bath for a long time. The breakfast was delicious, and it made me want to try their dinner as well. The staff at the ryokan were very attentive and kind. However, the amenities were somewhat lacking, and it would be nice to have a safe in the room. The soft-serve ice cream available at the front desk was also very tasty!

Introduction of the Accommodation

Road

Immerse yourself in the hot spring in serene luxury, surrounded by timeless charm.

Perched on a hill in Komoro, Shinshu, Nakadanaso is a historic Onsen Accommodation where the Meiji-era literary master Toson Shimazaki stayed often and wrote *Sketches of the Chikuma River*. Centered around Harikoshitei—an Edo-period former residence designated as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property—the Taisho Wing and Heisei Wing stand in harmony, creating spaces where you can feel the charm of each era just as it was. Inside the building, you’ll find exhibits related to Toson as well as the “Toson Room,” offering an atmosphere shaped by literature and time. In the wooden Taisho Wing, even details such as a tatami-mat changing area reminiscent of a feudal lord’s bath remain, preserving history in every corner. The property’s own hilltop hot spring source yields smooth, mildly alkaline water. Gently tinted and soft on the skin, it leaves you feeling silkier with every soak. In the rustic open-air bath, relax under water flowing from bamboo spouts while taking in nature through all four seasons. From October to May, enjoy the “First Love Apple Bath,” inspired by Toson’s poetry. Soaking amid its sweet-tart fragrance is a special experience found only here. For adults who cherish literature, Onsen, and tranquility—spend a timeless moment of rest at Nakadanaso.
