Atsugi Iiyama Onsen Motoyu Ryokan
Kanagawa Prefecture/Atsugi Iiyama OnsenA Ryokan with Onsen located about 60 minutes by car from Tokyo. Enjoy the beautifying hot spring with a pH value of 11.3.
Just 60 minutes from the city center, this Property features a popular Onsen with a strong alkaline pH of 11.3. Rooms with intricately designed floor pillars evoke the charm of traditional Japanese houses. Enjoy kaiseki cuisine prepared by the head chef, who holds the title of Shijo Shinryu master. Relax while listening to the murmuring stream flowing right in front.
This was my second stay, and this time I visited in summer. The Room was much larger than last time and seemed newly renovated—a Japanese-Western style Room with beds.Dinner and breakfast were served in a private room in a separate building, the same as before. This time it was a summer-style kaiseki featuring sweetfish (ayu). (In winter, it’s wild boar hot pot.)The open-air bath in the Room was also great. There are two large public baths; my favorite is the one with hot spring water cascading like a waterfall, which is used as the men’s bath at night and the women’s bath in the morning. I was even more satisfied than last time.Guests ranged from families with children to couples and married couples.Even the walk from the parking lot to the Room has a charming atmosphere, so I can recommend it. The service is very polite as well. (It seems staff change between dinner and breakfast—there were lots of “mom”-type staff members in the morning.) You’ll find tanuki figures all around. Also, the vending machines are reasonably priced, and it was nice that there were bottled drinks for each guest plus a thermos of iced water in the Room. (So you don’t need to buy water beforehand.)*Since you can’t tell the exact Room layout at Reservation, if you care about futons vs beds or whether there is a partition for the bath area, it may be best to call and confirm.* (The Room we had last time in February 2025 had futons, and if you opened the curtain by the open-air bath you could be seen. This time we had a Western-style bedroom with beds, and there was also a door/wooden screen by the open-air bath—so there were differences. It’s possible renovations have been done since then.)
KazuKazu7777... 8/11/2026This was my first return visit since last winter. I came for the ayu dishes, and everything was delicious. As a Room with an open-air bath was available, we were kindly upgraded. The Facility itself is old, but the hot spring water quality is excellent and left my skin feeling smooth. The view from the bath, with plenty of greenery, was very relaxing. Since the ayu changes by month, I would like to visit again next year.

Introduction of the Accommodation

A hidden property reminiscent of a castle town.
A stunningly large raccoon welcomes you at the historically rich "玄門." As you pass through玄門 and proceed along the path to the main entrance, you will feel as if you are entering a castle town. Passing through the main entrance ahead, a passage reminiscent of the alleys of a castle town will lead you to your Room.

Our establishment is located in a mountain village where the changing seasons bring the beauty of cherry blossoms, yamabuki, hydrangeas, mountain lilies, camellias, and sasanqua, offering a soothing atmosphere for travelers. We have always strived to create a garden that blooms year-round, welcoming our guests with a serene ambiance. This is because we believe that providing an environment where not only the body is healed through the Onsen but also the mind is relaxed and rejuvenated is what we aim to offer our guests. As a long-loved hot spring retreat, we are committed to preserving this tradition while continuing to provide our guests with an "evolving space of relaxation." Motoyu Co., Ltd. Representative Director Noriyoshi Ishikawa

Upon entering the Room, what catches the eye is the splendid floor pillar and the neatly arranged flowers. The floor pillars are present in the 26 Rooms of the Motoyu Ryokan, carefully selected by our proprietor from across The whole country. Each is intricately designed, reflecting the thoughtful craftsmanship unique to Atsugi, a former timber-producing region.

The meals feature fresh ingredients from the mountains and sea, thanks to the location near Higashi Tanzawa and Sagami Bay, prepared by the head chef holding the title of Shijo Shinryu, offering kaiseki cuisine using seasonal local ingredients.

The strong alkaline spring with a pH of 11.3, ranked top in The whole country, is known as the "beauty skin spring," highly appreciated by female guests and safe for babies with sensitive skin, is the pride of the Genyu Ryokan.

Our innkeeper has carefully selected unique "floor pillars" from The whole country of Japan. Rooms with intricately designed floor pillars evoke the charm of traditional Japanese houses. Enjoy the distinctive features of "Atsugi," historically known as a "timber hub."
