History of Maruya

In the Shimosuwa-juku area, our family is located in the central part of the station and has served as a sub-honjin under the name "Maruya Yoshiburo (a name passed down through generations)."

Architectural style of the late Edo period

This building incorporates the architectural style of the inns of Shimosuwa-juku from the late Edo period. In Shimosuwa Town, efforts are being made to create a harmonious townscape and surrounding environment centered around the Akimiya and Harumiya of Suwa Taisha Shimosha, which are valuable historical sites. The building is constructed entirely of wood and plaster walls, including its structural materials. Additionally, many beams and other materials from the previous building (constructed in 1911) have been reused. The storehouse (originally built in the early Meiji period) has also been restored and revitalized in its original form.

Overhanging lattice beam structure

■ Projecting Beam Lattice Design The beam on the front side of the first floor extends one foot towards the street, and a lattice is fitted into the road-facing opening. The end of the "projecting beam" is called a wooden nose and is decorated with cloud shapes or monkey heads. ■ Dense Vertical Lattice The shape of the lattice is called a dense vertical lattice, a unique style of the Suwa lodging station. Lattices have unique forms depending on each region.
