Hotel Yamayuri at Watarase Onsen, Dairoten no Yado
Wakayama Prefecture/Watarase OnsenA property filled with Japanese relaxation and elegance, surrounded by trees.
The largest open-air bath in Western Japan can accommodate up to 500 people at once, offering an experience akin to an attraction. Immerse yourself in the flowing Onsen and fully enjoy the sense of liberation.
As the name “Accommodation with a Large Open-Air Bath” suggests, it’s wonderful that there are multiple spacious, open-air baths with a great sense of openness. There are also plenty of washing stations, so I could enjoy the hot water freely without worrying about other guests. I was also surprised that each of the four free private baths is as large as, or even larger than, a typical open-air bath. The morning bath starts at 6:00, but Onsen lovers would be even happier if it opened a little earlier. The Room shows its age to some extent, but it was well cleaned and comfortable. The meals were just the right amount—not too much or too little—and the breakfast rice porridge was especially good. When I mentioned that the lighting during dinner was glaring because it shone directly on me, they responded immediately; they also kindly explained details about the return bus service—overall, the staff’s hospitality was excellent. Although access by public transportation is somewhat limited, this is an Accommodation I would definitely like to stay at again if I have another chance to visit Kumano.

[Notice of Outdoor Onsen Facility Hot Water Supply Construction]
Thank you for always choosing Watarase Onsen.
Starting from July 1, 2024, we will be conducting excavation work within the outdoor Onsen Facility to secure a stable hot water supply. During this period, the men's outdoor Onsen and three areas at the back will be unavailable. Depending on the progress of the construction, there may also be restrictions on access to other areas. The construction is expected to take approximately one and a half years to complete.
We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused over this extended period and kindly ask for your understanding and cooperation.

The ancient path "Kumano Kodo" is the route once traveled by predecessors aiming to visit the three Kumano shrines. Walking along the moss-covered old path through natural forests, you will encounter many scenic and historical sites, including the remains of the Ninety-Nine Oji Shrines. It is said that people walked this path over approximately one month, carrying their admiration for the sacred land and various prayers and wishes.
