The property served as the setting for the famous work 'Snow Country'. It features an exhibition room showcasing works by Yasunari Kawabata, the creator of 'Snow Country', as well as a literary archive, a book corner with hundreds of volumes, and a movie viewing room, making it an ideal facility for fans of 'literature and onsen'.
This was a wonderful Accommodation that made my first trip to Niigata truly special.While the building and furnishings showed their age,there were programs where we could enjoy local culture, such as shamisen performances and readings about the snow country,and thoughtful amenities like sake lees face packs, Japanese sake, and coffee,making it an Accommodation where we could fully enjoy Yuzawa.All of the staff, as well as the shamisen instructor, were outstanding. Thank you very much for your hospitality.
たび びと 8/16/2026This is my fourth stay. I visit for therapeutic Onsen stays outside the ski season. The free-flowing simple spring water is a lukewarm bath, making it perfect for this purpose. With their own valuable private source, fresh water is constantly supplied in generous volume, and I really love it.Many truly free-flowing Onsen are located far away in the mountains, but here you’re just a 5-minute Shuttle Service ride from the Shinkansen station—an Accommodation that’s easy to visit. Of course, both the Accommodation and the service are wonderful. It’s a historic, traditional retro inn, yet their commitment to cleanliness is exceptionally high. Thank you as always for keeping everything so spotless; it makes for a very comfortable stay.Many of the staff are international, but they have a calm demeanor and leave a great impression. Personally, I consider this a five-star Onsen.Lately I’ve been choosing a Plan without dinner, but I used to have dinner as well—everything was delicious, with plenty of local dishes and gentle seasoning. Breakfast in particular stands out: handmade tofu, simmered fried tofu, noppei-jiru (a local thickened soup), and Koshihikari white rice—always something I look forward to.I plan to visit again next month. Introduction of the Accommodation
100% natural Onsen, miraculous 43 degrees Celsius.
Unlike other source wells in Yuzawa, the hot spring water of Takahan is a natural outflow source. Since it is not oxidized, it works directly on cells, providing outstanding benefits. Maintaining a temperature of 43 degrees without adding water or adjusting the temperature is truly a miracle for a natural outflow. This Onsen is characterized by its extremely high freshness.
He stayed here for three years and wrote the novel 'Snow Country'.
The masterpiece 'Snow Country' by the literary figure Kawabata Yasunari was written in the 'Kasumi Room' of Takahan from late autumn of Showa 9 to Showa 12. It narrates the non-romantic story of Shimamura and the geisha Komako at the melancholic 'Snow Country Property' Takahan of that time, expressed in prose as beautiful as poetry.
Only Ryokans that value local food culture and ingredients, allowing guests to savor authentic ingredients, are granted the title of A-Class Gourmet Three-Star Certified Ryokan.
