VILLA COMMUNICO is a gastronomic auberge located at the foot of Mount Wakakusa in the ancient city of Nara, where we create and share a new culinary experience for Nara using primitive wood-fired cooking. Chef Horita, who earned a Michelin star in the Nara Michelin Guide 2022 and 2023, has elevated the innovative restaurant "COMMUNICO" to new heights. In September 2024, we will welcome guests to our auberge with five guest rooms at the base of Mount Wakakusa. "COMMUNICO" means "to share" in Latin. At VILLA COMMUNICO, we carefully source seasonal blessings, select game meat, and wild river fish delivered daily by dedicated producers who share our vision. Together with our guests, we aim to share and cultivate a new food culture for Nara.
Before dinner, the second-floor gallery overlooking Mt. Wakakusa becomes a waiting bar, where you can relax while watching the deer heading home.Once guided to the first-floor restaurant, you are welcomed by the hearth and served—standing—local cucumber gazpacho, Yamato Nikudori chicken (a firm-textured gamefowl-type breed?) pinchos, and freshly made mozzarella kneaded right in front of you. After being gently drawn in at an unhurried pace, you are shown to your table. The course goes without saying: each dish showcases carefully selected ingredients with meticulous technique, paired with clear and thoughtful explanations. And finally, even the coffee comes as a surprise.The staff are friendly as well, with a comfortable sense of distance.

Wakakusa.When I arrived, I found that although the old building had been renovated, the interior felt like a completely different world!And to my surprise, there was Michelin’s Bibendum.I hadn’t realized it was a Michelin-starred restaurant and even asked if it was okay to come in travel clothes (lol).The Room also impressed me—the ceiling slopes down at an angle, and the design is not only beautiful but incredibly detailed.Dining while watching the wood fire, and the richness of the drink pairing as well.I was moved from start to finish.Thank you very much.

Mount Wakakusa
Mountain access is available directly in front of the Hotel (fee required). A 20-30 minute hike offers breathtaking views of the Nara Basin.
The hotel is located on the street connecting Tōdai-ji Temple and Kasuga-taisha Shrine at the foot of Mount Wakakusa in Nara Park. It offers excellent access to tourist attractions and retains many charming pilgrimage paths.
It takes about a 10-minute walk to reach Nigatsudo. From there, you can see the Ikoma mountain range over the roof of Todaiji Temple.
