Relax in a warm, intimate retreat with just eight rooms, overlooking tranquil water features and a pine grove.
Senbon Matsubara, the most scenic spot along the Tokaido, captivated countless artists and literary masters from the Meiji through Showa eras. In one corner stands a Japanese-style building created from the vision of a tea devotee who dreamed of hosting a grand tea gathering for 1,000 guests. Marking its 110th anniversary in 2023, it was relaunched as a project to pass Numazu’s treasured cultural asset on to future generations, and has been reborn as a restaurant serving course-style Chinese cuisine reminiscent of traditional tea kaiseki. Adjacent on an approximately 3,000-tsubo estate is an Accommodation that feels like a private residence, with eight guest rooms designed by architect Akira Watanabe. Blending seamlessly with the garden scenery spread out below, it invites you to slow down and savor the gentle flow of time. Japanese and Western, classic and modern. Enjoy an incomparable hidden retreat where contrasting elements come together in perfect harmony.
Simply the best. The staff’s professionalism, service, Room, meals, and architecture—everything was outstanding, and it made for a truly satisfying stay. The fittings were beautifully maintained, and it was fun just walking around and taking in the Facility. The amenities were well stocked, and the minibar was exceptionally well supplied, making for a wonderful time. And above all, the food was incredible—both dinner and breakfast were a perfect 10/10. Great care is also put into the desserts, which were delicious.A place I definitely want to return to.
bird_0728 6/16/2026The tea pavilion, designated as a Tangible Cultural Property, was truly beautiful. A member of the Hotel staff kindly guided us inside and explained it to us, making this an unforgettable trip. The Hotel building itself was also wonderful and looked beautiful both during the day and at night. When traveling, I often end up turning on the TV or going to a convenience store to buy drinks, but here there was no TV and plenty of drinks in the Room, so I could relax without going out at all. It was incredibly refreshing. The grounds are spacious and full of greenery, and it was also great that we couldn’t see any roads or other buildings. It seems the garden changes with the seasons, so I’d love to visit again in a different season. Thank you very much.

Introduction of the Accommodation
Suki Collective Tea Pavilion “Su” – Collective Annex Villa
Senbon Matsubara in Numazu City, Shizuoka Prefecture, offers magnificent views of Mt. Fuji and Suruga Bay. A serene and elegant setting near Senbonhama Park, where a pine grove that escaped the ravages of war still stretches on. Tucked away in one corner stands a quiet cluster of tea pavilions and an impressive collection of private villas.

In 2006, a cluster of detached villas was added to the 3,000-tsubo grounds, designed by architect Akira Watanabe. Built with wood and earth—two of nature’s most elemental materials—the architecture inherits the tradition of sukiya style while expressing a contemporary sense of Japanese aesthetics, creating harmony throughout the property. The rammed-earth walls, layered with sand and soil from the Fujikawa River, blend into the landscape as shifting sunlight continually reveals changing textures—at times firm, at times soft. The Yoshino cedar used for the roof is treated as a living material: left almost entirely in its natural state, it is laid densely and formed simply by pressing it down from above. Fed by abundant spring water from Mt. Fuji, the reflecting pool offers a cool murmur in summer and catches warm sunlight in winter—sometimes mirroring the building’s shadows on its surface—delighting guests with ever-changing seasonal beauty. Numazu Club—considered one of Akira Watanabe’s final works—offers moments of true bliss that go beyond what can be seen, inviting you to surrender yourself to its unique sense of time and space.

The thatched-roof nagayamon gatehouse at the entrance to the grounds and the sukiya-style building have been designated as a National Tangible Cultural Property in recognition of their historical and artistic value. Designed so that every room functions as a tea room, this cluster of tea pavilions is filled with thoughtful details—each space features a different ceiling, and lintels are set deliberately low in keeping with Kyoto tradition, reflecting a meticulous commitment to design. One of the defining materials of this sukiya style is hand-blown glass, used lavishly for windows and glass doors. While sukiya architecture is traditionally built from wood, grass, and earth, this building makes generous use of mineral-based glass to create an open connection to the garden even with low ceilings and lintels—allowing the glass to blend naturally into its surroundings. Relocated from Kyoto, the three-mat daime tea room has eaves extending in two directions and includes both a formal guest entrance (kijinguchi) and a crawl-in entrance (nijiriguchi). Windows of varying sizes are placed at different heights along the walls, letting soft light filter through shoji screens into the room. From hand-blown window glass to an expansive ajiro lattice ceiling, Numazu Club brings together rare materials and craftsmanship that cannot be replicated with today’s technology—an extraordinary space defined by playfulness and refined luxury.
