NIPPONIA Shirotaka Gennai Residence
Yamagata Prefecture/Nishiokitama District"Entire Building Rental" - Stay in the Storehouse Suite and indulge in local gourmet delights.
Shirataka Town in Yamagata Prefecture, praised as the "Arcadia of the East," is a place where beautiful nature remains untouched. In 2021, historic storehouses and residences, watched over by the Iide Mountain Range, were fully renovated into "Dozo Suites" accommodations. Surrounded by a vast garden, all four storehouses have been transformed into private luxury spaces as "one-building rental suites with cypress baths." Enjoy an extraordinary stay in these charming rooms while admiring rare trees and natural beauty in the garden, experiencing the tranquil and serene flow of time in this peaceful countryside. For dining, a young chef skilled in French cuisine crafts dishes that highlight local ingredients while embracing regional culture and traditions. Dinner features a course menu showcasing "local gourmet delights," paired with exquisite Japanese sake or wine for an elevated experience. Breakfast includes traditional fermented foods such as miso soup, natto, and pickles—an ideal way to rejuvenate your body at the start of the day. Savor seasonal culinary treasures rooted in local traditions while reflecting on the charm of these historic storehouses. Indulge your mind and body during your serene stay amidst this quiet countryside retreat.
The stylish, delicious French dinner and the breakfast—traditional Japanese cuisine full of Yamagata’s local flavors—were both very satisfying. Both the manager and the chef were truly hospitable, and even in the quiet atmosphere we enjoyed warm interactions with people, making it a wonderful time. I also felt it would be nice to have services such as a Shuttle Service from Nagai Station. The Room was spacious, chic inside the kura storehouse, and the blend of old traditional house charm with stylish interior design made us feel truly indulged.I would love to visit again in autumn to enjoy the garden’s beautiful fall foliage.Thank you very much.

Introduction of the Accommodation

Stay at a historic estate of a prosperous farmer with over 100 years of history.
The Okuyama family, originating from "Takahashi Gen'nai," thrived as prosperous farmers during the Yonezawa Domain era, contributing to the development of the region. Their grand residence, built with masterful craftsmanship, features five unique storehouses that preserve and convey the culture of the Meiji to Taisho periods to this day.

Renovated and reborn in 2021, this property blends traditional architecture with modern comfort to create a new relaxing space. Featuring robust beams, plastered storehouse doors, and the preserved beauty of its original design, it incorporates Yamagata's unique crafts and furniture for a serene and comfortable stay.

A serene Arcadia of the East, embraced by countryside and mountains
The Okitama region in southern Yamagata Prefecture is a picturesque area that preserves the idyllic rural landscapes once called the "Arcadia of the East" during the Meiji era. Gennaitei is nestled within vast rice fields, offering breathtaking views of the majestic Asahi Mountain Range and snow-capped Iide Mountain Range. Experience refreshing breezes, the scent of grass, birdsong, and frogs' chorus. Come and immerse yourself in scenery that resonates deeply with Japan's cultural memory.

Four of the five traditional storehouses, built during the Taisho era, have been renovated to highlight their unique characteristics. Step through the sturdy kura doors and enter an extraordinary space. As a private rental, you can enjoy a worry-free and exclusive stay.

The bathtub made of domestic cypress solid wood is spacious enough for even taller guests to stretch out comfortably. Enjoy a relaxing time surrounded by the refreshing scent of wood. *Please note this is not an Onsen.

Upon arrival, relax with seasonal tea and Shirotaka sweets. Feel free to ask our staff about highlights of the property or recommended itineraries. *Check-in time: 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM

The symbol of the Gennaitei, "Main Building," is a guesthouse from 1921. The drink corner at the front desk is available 24 hours. The lounge on the second floor is a conversation space illuminated by light through Taisho glass windows. Enjoy a relaxing view of the garden with a drink in hand.

Enjoy your stay while experiencing the charm of wearing a kimono. We offer a kimono dressing experience. In Shirotaka, once known for its thriving sericulture industry, immerse yourself in the traditional lifestyle where kimonos were an everyday presence. *Reservation required at least one week in advance / Additional fees apply.*

A dining experience in a renovated miso warehouse from 1897. Enjoy a French dinner course crafted with meticulous attention to detail, paired with locally produced sake. *For guests who do not consume alcohol, we offer homemade non-alcoholic beverages.
