Stay in a historic residence in Onomichi. Enjoy a comfortable space surrounded by natural cedar and cypress wood.
Long cherished as a Ryokan that welcomed distinguished guests, this residence has long been held in high regard. The Horiuchi family once flourished as coastal shipping merchants who traveled by boat throughout Japan. Today, Azumi Setoda has inherited their former home, the “Former Horiuchi Residence,” and reimagined it as a Ryokan. A Seto Inland Sea journey in a 140-year-old merchant mansion Azumi Setoda was born from the legacy of the Horiuchi family, prominent merchants who prospered in Setoda through salt production and maritime trade. While preserving 140 years of precious architectural details, the guest rooms have been redesigned as modern spaces for relaxation. Centered on seasonal ingredients from the sea and mountains of Setouchi, we offer a course menu that draws out their character through a variety of techniques. Unbound by any single genre, this approach carries on the history of Setoda—a port town where ships once came and went and diverse cultures and knowledge naturally converged. Enjoy cuisine found nowhere else, served with vessels passed down from the Horiuchi family.
I stayed for one night with my parents (three of us total) with both dinner and breakfast included. The Accommodation had a calm atmosphere centered around hinoki cypress, and I felt truly relaxed while enjoying the scent and warmth of the wood. The French dinner was carefully prepared dish by dish, and I was completely satisfied with both the presentation and the taste. Breakfast was also delicious, made with local ingredients, so I thoroughly enjoyed the meals throughout my stay. I also used the on-site public bath; since it was a weekday it wasn’t crowded, which allowed me to soak at a leisurely pace. Most memorable of all was the staff’s hospitality. Everyone greeted us with a smile and kindness, and their thoughtful attention to detail made me very happy. I felt comfortable from start to finish, and it was such a wonderful place that it naturally made me want to come back. My family loved it as well, and it became a great memory for us all.
ありえす 7/9/2026I stayed for one night in late April. The building’s exterior, the atmosphere as soon as I stepped inside, and the staff’s hospitality—everything was wonderful. There were many things to see and enjoy throughout the property. This time I stayed in a maisonette-style Room. The compact space was thoughtfully and elegantly designed, with a warm feel. The tones of the wood and the way the light came in created a calming atmosphere.Since the bed is located right near the entrance, some guests may find it refreshingly unique. The small courtyard garden also let me feel the season, which was lovely.Upstairs, there was a sunken kotatsu set into tatami flooring and a spacious balcony area that felt very open. The yukimi shoji screens also created an especially beautiful ambiance. The in-room bath has an unusual layout without a door, but it wasn’t an issue at all and felt relaxing. The bath at the affiliated Accommodation right across from us had vivid tiles and even a sauna, which was wonderful. One of us had slightly hurt our leg, and we truly appreciated your thoughtful care in preparing a chair for us.Both dinner and breakfast were beyond words—completely satisfying. The food and hospitality were deeply comforting to both body and mind. It’s a place that made me want to return to spend another slow, peaceful time.Thank you very much for such a wonderful stay.

Introduction of the Accommodation

Setoda lies along the Shimanami Kaido in the Seto Inland Sea, embraced by a pleasant sea breeze, calm blue waters, and vibrant trees and citrus groves. While honoring the time-honored traditions rooted in this area, we have incorporated many modern elements as a Ryokan. The Ryokan “Azumi Setoda” and “yubune,” an inn with an attached public bathhouse, opened on March 1, 2021. We will continue to propose new possibilities for the Ryokan as a fresh expression of Japanese culture.

Once in Setoda, there was a wealthy merchant family named the Horiuchi family, who mainly ran salt production and maritime shipping businesses. “Azumi Setoda” was born by inheriting the “Horiuchi Residence,” built in 1876 in the early Meiji period as their home. While it is a Ryokan with traditional charm, its spaces are designed with a modern sensibility. From the interior to the garden, the entire property is harmoniously composed for a comfortable stay. Respecting its history as the former Horiuchi Residence, every detail conveys the feeling of being welcomed into a private home.

Based in Kyoto, Rokakuya architect Shiro Miura—known for traditional Japanese architecture—carefully renovated the Horiuchi Residence while preserving its valuable original style. Respecting how the home was once used, the design carries forward as much as possible of what has long stood here—the exterior, pillars, beams, stonework, and plants—so it can be passed on to the present and future. Living natural materials such as wood, stone, and earth harmonize in perfect balance with Setoda’s sea breeze, sunlight, and climate.

It comprises a garden, gazebo, restaurant, bar, lounge, and shop. In addition, a newly built annex Accommodation with an attached public bath, “yubune,” will open at the same time. The facility features a public bath and sauna, a post-bath lounge, and guest rooms, and is positioned as a more functional “hatago” (traditional inn), open to both the local community and travelers.
