A traditional ryotei-style accommodation with over 250 years of history, featuring 13 rooms where you can savor exquisite Japanese kaiseki cuisine.

The port town of Onomichi, which has flourished in the maritime industry since the Middle Ages, has developed a unique culture through the exchange of numerous people, goods, and wealth. This "miniature garden-like city" woven by the sea, mountains, and islands is a place where you can enjoy the "bounty of the mountains and sea," including seafood from the Seto Inland Sea such as oysters, local vegetables grown in the warm climate, and seasonal fruits. [Onomichi Hansei] is a small inn with a restaurant that inherits over 250 years of history, featuring 13 rooms. It is a renewed version of the restaurant [Tohan], which originated from the culinary inn [Ehan] loved by late Edo period patriots and Hirobumi Ito. We have created a stay where you can feel close to the "traditions and food culture of Onomichi" while being inside the facility, starting with the "cuisine showcased by the small inn with a restaurant" that inherits the history of the former restaurant. The concept of [Onomichi Hansei] is "Heartful, Japanese Modern Classic." We offer hospitality with services that mainly delight female guests, incorporating a "Japanese Modern Classic" taste into the interior decorations and room designs.

  • The Room was compact, but very functional. Even though it was on the second floor, there was a small garden outside the window, which felt soothing. It was disappointing that the meal time couldn’t be arranged as we hoped, but the sashimi at dinner was carefully prepared, and we were able to enjoy dishes like conger eel shabu-shabu and sea bream rice at a relaxed pace. The sea bream chazuke set for breakfast was unusual and delicious. There was only an indoor bath, but it was a relaxing bath with warm water flowing over the shoulders, which we really enjoyed. Next time, we’d like to book a Multiple Night Stay and fully enjoy exploring Onomichi.

  • This Accommodation had excellent food.Dinner was great, and the morning sea bream chazuke was especially delicious. They also introduced us to some great local places, and the Kikujudo monaka they served was so good that we went to the shop to buy some as souvenirs. We could feel their thoughtful attention in many ways, and the service was very good.It is a Ryokan where you can enjoy a comfortable stay.I deducted one star because I couldn’t drink any beer—I’m not sure whether the refrigerator wouldn’t open or I just couldn’t open it.

Introduction of the Accommodation

Image a_tp_01.jpg
After more than 250 years of history, the ryotei small Stays [Onomichi Hansei] opened on December 27, 2020.

Onomichi City, Hiroshima Prefecture, a "miniature garden city" with a natural good harbor, has flourished as a logistics hub for maritime transport since ancient times. The scenic beauty woven by the sea, mountains, and islands has captivated many literary figures, and it has been recognized as a Japan Heritage site for two consecutive years, attracting much attention both domestically and internationally as a historic commercial district. Ryotei Koyado [Onomichi Hansei] is an inn with 13 rooms, located 8 minutes by car from Onomichi Station, surrounded by the history and nature of the Seto Inland Sea. It is a renovated version of the ryotei "Tohan," which was formerly the culinary inn "Ehan," loved by late Edo period patriots and Hirobumi Ito. "We aim to inherit and utilize the history and will of this land to further revitalize the entire region and tourism industry." In December of Reiwa 2 (2020), we embarked on a new beginning as a place to disseminate new culture from Onomichi, inheriting the will of the building that has hosted guests from both domestic and abroad for over 250 years.

The trade name of [Onomichi Hansei] connecting Edo and Reiwa

Onomichi, which celebrated its 850th anniversary of opening in 2019, was once a bustling town where many people came and went as large and small sailing ships, such as the Kitamaebune, entered and exited the Onomichi Waterway. In those days, canvas for ships was actively woven. Furthermore, the restaurant "Kohan" (Kohan) was affectionately known as "Tosei Han'eiro" (Tosei Han'eiro), and from its history, two characters were taken to name it "Han'oto," imagining the sound of sails heard from the distant past. Additionally, the logo adopts the "Kitamaebune," which connected ports and cultures across the whole country during the Edo period, as its motif. With the history of Onomichi and Kohan (Kohan) embedded in its name, it begins anew as a property in the Reiwa era.

This is the Onomichi Hansei style. The meticulous presentation of each dish and the use of exquisite tableware allow you to "enjoy the cuisine with all five senses," which is a delightful point for women.
