Enjoy a cultural journey at this decentralized Hotel, where history, nature, and tradition come alive—immersed in the streetscape of Takehara, a town that once flourished through salt production.

Takehara, located along the coast of the Seto Inland Sea, flourished as one of Japan's leading salt production areas since the Edo period. By the Taisho era, it boasted 26 sake breweries thanks to its prosperity from salt. The people of that time competed to build many remarkable structures, creating a beautiful townscape that still retains its historical charm today. Known as "Little Kyoto of Aki," Takehara has been designated as a Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings by the Japanese government. Nestled seamlessly within this historic townscape is NIPPONIA Hotel Takehara Saltworks Town. As a dispersed hotel with buildings scattered throughout the area, including a former bank and former restaurant, each structure has been carefully restored to respect its historical background while providing modern comfort. This creates an extraordinary space where you can experience timeless richness. For dining, we offer dishes crafted with local ingredients such as seafood and citrus nurtured by Setouchi's mild climate and various salts differing in flavor depending on their production method or origin. Pair these with sake from three long-established breweries with over 150 years of history to indulge in an exquisite culinary journey. Conveniently located for visits to Okunoshima Island, Shimanami Kaido cycling route, and Onomichi sightseeing spots, immerse yourself in the history and culture alive in this area while savoring salt, sake, and delicacies unique to Setouchi that continue to be cherished today.

  • We booked the “Chef’s Choice Kura Twin” Plan and stayed in Room 101 of the MOSO building. The Room was a very comfortable size for two people. The beams, the safe room, and the steep stairs were all experiences you don’t usually get to have, so they felt truly special. The dinner we had been looking forward to was delicious. In particular, the rich flavor of Togeshita beef and the vivid colors of the corn bavarois appetizer left a strong impression. We chose an anniversary Plan, and we were delighted to see our requested message along with a ribbon. At breakfast as well, staff offered refills at just the right time, and they also knew we were staying on an anniversary Plan and kindly took photos for us—making it a very pleasant time.It was a stay that made us feel truly welcomed—both by the Accommodation and by the town!We also loved the Takehara Campbell juice listed on the lounge and restaurant drink menus. It’s grape juice, but I’d never tasted one with such clarity before. We had it again at a roadside station after checkout—and even bought more to take home.A couple of small things we noticed:Dust had collected in the basket in the washroom. Each time we entered to use the sink, the toilet lid sensor reacted and opened automatically; we would prefer it without automatic opening/closing.

  • Thanks to NIPPONIA HOTEL, we were able to fully enjoy the Takehara Historic Preservation District, known as the “Little Kyoto of Aki.”The moment we stepped into the district, the deep blue sky and charming streetscape created a soothing, extraordinary atmosphere…We left our luggage at the NIPPONIA HOTEL front building within the preservation district, had lunch with Takehara-yaki made with sake lees, then strolled around. Along the way, we took a break at VMG Café (the former Morikawa Residence, which becomes a guest-only lounge in the evening), enjoying tea and cake while admiring the garden… After that, we walked to Jizodo Hall and Fumeikaku on higher ground and all the way to Michi-no-Eki Takehara, also enjoying the scenery of the streets from dusk onward. We truly experienced what makes staying at NIPPONIA HOTEL so special.Dinner was a French course meal; from amuse-bouche to dessert, everything was beautifully presented, thoughtfully prepared with care for each ingredient, and delicious. In particular, the seasoning of breakfast dishes such as simmered items (nimono), lightly simmered vegetables (nibitashi), and grilled dishes was the best among all Accommodation breakfasts we have had so far. Also, our Room had a spacious garden and an extra-long veranda engawa), allowing us to spend nostalgic time that felt like coming back home.

3 Brewery Tasting Set

A traditional sake that has witnessed the history of Takehara.

Three historic sake breweries, each with over 150 years of history, are located in the preserved district of Takehara, a town once thriving from salt production during the Edo period. By the Meiji and Taisho eras, sake brewing had flourished here, with up to 26 breweries operating at its peak. Among these is the birthplace of Masataka Taketsuru, founder of Nikka Whisky. We highly recommend trying a tasting set featuring sake from all three breweries during your dinner to fully experience Takehara's rich sake culture. **Taketsuru Sake Brewery:** Originally starting as a salt producer in 1733 (Kyōhō 18), this brewery began making sake and continues to pursue natural brewing methods while preserving traditional techniques. It is also renowned as the birthplace of Masataka Taketsuru, known as "the father of Japanese whisky." **Fujii Sake Brewery:** Established in the late Edo period in Hiroshima Prefecture, this brewery gained fame for its "Ryusei" label, which was once awarded Japan’s best sake. At their on-site "Sake Brewery Exchange Hall," visitors can enjoy tastings and purchase souvenirs. **Nakao Brewing Company:** Known for their dedication to quality with unfiltered sakes made entirely from Bizen Omachi rice and boasting a specific designation ratio of 98%. They also innovate by producing unique beverages such as apple yeast-based sakes and fruit liqueurs using Hiroshima-grown lemons.

Experience the rich nature of Setouchi.

Take a step back in time and explore the historic town of Takehara, known for its beautifully preserved streets featuring the grand residences of wealthy merchants from the early Edo period and historic temples. Our property is located in a district designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings, offering a nostalgic atmosphere reminiscent of a bygone era. Some rooms offer views of Fumyo-kaku, said to be inspired by Kyoto's Kiyomizu-dera Temple. Okunoshima, also known as "Rabbit Island," where you can interact with wild rabbits, attracts visitors from around the world and is especially popular with families. For those looking to fully enjoy nature, we recommend Osakikamijima Island—a remote island without bridges—where you can experience dyeing crafts, fruit picking, seaside leisure activities, cycling, and more. At our property, we also use ingredients sourced from Osakikamijima. Relax in Onsen while enjoying panoramic views of the Seto Inland Sea at Kinoe Onsen or take in breathtaking multi-island scenery at Mount Kamimine. Embark on a journey filled with natural beauty and rejuvenation!
