Ishiyama Rikyu Gosoku no Kutsu is a Ryokan located in Amakusa, at the westernmost tip of Kyushu, within the Unzen-Amakusa National Park, on a mountain overlooking the East China Sea. This Onsen Ryokan features detached rooms, each with its own open-air bath. The people of Amakusa have lived in harmony with the sea since ancient times. We wanted to shape the passionate stories woven by the people of Amakusa and their great history into the form of a Ryokan. We aspired to create a Property that could only exist in Amakusa— a Property that could only be expressed by the people of Amakusa. With this heartfelt desire, we created the Ryokan "Ishiyama Rikyu Gosoku no Kutsu."

  • Excellent Accommodation

    I stayed at "Gosoku no Kutsu" for two nights and three days. This accommodation is in a perfect location where you can enjoy the beautiful sunset over the East China Sea from an open-air bath. Amakusa is famous for its hidden Christians, and the church-style dining area has a unique, exotic atmosphere. The meals, featuring fresh seafood from the Ariake Sea, were incredibly delicious. Although it was a short stay, it was a truly relaxing trip. Thank you very much!

  • I experienced a space from another dimension.

    It felt like stepping into the era of the Kirishitan, being in Ubud, Bali, or surrounded by a serene moss-covered garden—a truly unique and mysterious experience. The villa featured double sinks and an open-air bath that embraced nature, which were delightful. The meals were exceptional, especially the fried horse mackerel and mirin-dried fish served in the morning. The flexible dining system without fixed times was also convenient. The sunset on Amakusa's west coast was stunningly beautiful. However, please be cautious of your footing as it is located amidst nature.

Christianity was introduced to Amakusa in 1566. Along with it came various aspects of Western culture, such as printing presses, sacred paintings, hymns, clocks, and organs. When different cultures meet, something entirely new is born. Amakusa in the 16th century was exactly that—a place where Japan encountered Europe, and perhaps one of the most elegant and refined locations in Japan at the time. Goto no Kutsu is a Ryokan that embodies the history, natural features, and essence of Amakusa.

Cuisine
Amakusa Shimoda Onsen is a fishing village where freshly caught local seafood is prepared with care and dedication.

Shimoda Onsen, home to Goshoku no Kutsu, is also a fishing village. At night, early morning, and dusk, all boats leaving Shimoda Port engage in coastal fishing. They fish using single-line fishing or retrieve set nets and return within about two hours. Therefore, fresh local fish is always delivered to Goshoku no Kutsu through intermediaries. The Kaiseki cuisine at Goshoku no Kutsu is prepared using local fish by skilled chefs.

At the western edge of Kyushu, a mountain overlooking the East China Sea in Amakusa is Gokoku. On this mountain, we have created a 10,000-tsubo estate with only 15 detached guest rooms. What we want to convey is the overwhelming landscape facing the sea. And, enjoy the Onsen in the open-air bath in your guest room. You can spend your favorite Onsen time with your loved ones at this Ryokan.

Staying for two or more nights at a single Ryokan is the true essence and luxury of travel. At Gosoku no Kutsu, we not only welcome Multiple Night Stays in the same Room but also recommend changing Rooms between the first and second nights. This is because each Room in our Ryokan offers a completely different atmosphere. Additionally, the cuisine differs between Villa AB and Villa C, allowing you to enjoy the various spaces of Gosoku no Kutsu. From the second night onward, the meals are entirely different from the first night. Our chefs prepare dishes with creative freedom, aiming to provide satisfaction and enjoyment for our guests.

The essence of the service at Goto no Kutsu lies in the hospitality of Amakusa households. Amakusa is an island located at the westernmost tip of Kyushu. We have always been delighted that people travel all the way to visit Amakusa. Therefore, when relatives from afar returned home, we would prepare for their arrival months in advance, such as asking fishermen for the best fish for a feast or re-stuffing futons. The same spirit applies when welcoming travelers. The heartfelt wish of our staff is simply this: "May your journey be a wonderful one..."

From Kyushu Expressway Matsubase Interchange, take Route 266, cross the Amakusa Gokyo Bridges, follow Route 324, use the Amakusa Shimoshima Cross-Island Road to enter Route 389, and head towards Shimoda Onsen. Approximately 2 hours from Matsubase Interchange.


Take Amakusa Airlines from Fukuoka Airport or Kumamoto Airport to Amakusa Airport. Travel time: Amakusa–Fukuoka 35 minutes, Amakusa–Kumamoto 20 minutes. From Amakusa Airport, it takes about 40 minutes by car or taxi (taxis are always available).


From Mogi Port: Take Reihoku Sightseeing Ferry to Tomioka Port. From Tomioka Port, it’s a 15-minute drive or taxi ride.
From Kuchinotsu Port: Take Shimabara Railway Ferry to Oniike Port. From Oniike Port, it’s a 40-minute drive or taxi ride.
From Kuranomoto Port: Take Sanwa Shosen Ferry to Ushibuka Port. From Ushibuka Port, it’s a 45-minute drive or taxi ride.


If using JR Kumamoto Station: Take the Kyushu Shinkansen from Hakata Station to Kumamoto Station (approx. travel time: 40 minutes). Transfer to the Misumi Line and travel to its final stop at Misumi Station (approx. travel time: 50 minutes). From Misumi Station by car is about a 1 hour and 30 minute drive; if taking a bus from Misumi Station, board one bound for Matsushima (approx. travel time: 30 minutes), transfer at Matsushima for Hondo Bus Center (approx. travel time: another 50 minutes), then take a taxi from Hondo Bus Center.

If using JR Nagasaki Station: Take Limited Express "Kamome" train from Hakata Station to Nagasaki Station (approximate travel time is about two hours). From JR Nagasaki Station by rental car or taxi via Nagasaki Dejima Road is approximately a15-minute trip to Mogi port
