- SETRE NARAMACHI
A machiya-style Accommodation by Sarusawa Pond, offering views of Kofuku-ji Temple’s five-story pagoda.
Long ago, in Nara, where Japan's first capital was established, various cultures arrived, blossomed into a unique culture, and became the foundation of later Japan. A land of numerous stories that have flourished, been inherited, and developed. A Hotel where you can enjoy the history, nature, culture, food, and art that can only be found here. A Hotel that connects numerous stories to the future. Why not start with Setre Naramachi?
Arriving drenched in sweat, I was able to take a breather right away in the lounge with the complimentary shaved ice service. It felt like the best kind of hospitality. The Room felt smaller than I expected, but everything was pleasantly well kept and I had a comfortable stay. Joining the morning walk was also worthwhile—I learned things for the first time thanks to the guide’s explanations, making it a meaningful experience. All of the staff were friendly and courteous. With Kofuku-ji Temple, Nara Park, and the station all nearby, it’s an ideal location for sightseeing, so I’d definitely like to stay here again when I visit Nara.
akipion 8/9/2026Above all, the location is outstanding. Set on the shore of Sarusawa Pond with Kofuku-ji Temple right in front, you can also reach the Nara National Museum and Kasuga Taisha Shrine by strolling along the shaded approach through greenery. And since it’s in a corner of Naramachi, you won’t have any trouble finding places to eat nearby. The early-morning walk around Nara Park guided by a local volunteer guide was also a fun event. The Hotel features generous use of Yoshino cedar throughout both the exterior and interior, and the guest Room is filled with a soothing natural wood fragrance. Instructions for using the air conditioner and shower were placed in easy-to-find spots, so there was no confusion. Both the front desk staff and restaurant staff were consistently pleasant and welcoming, allowing me to relax throughout my stay. Breakfast included steamed Yamato traditional vegetables and meat served with eight different condiments, which made it enjoyable to vary the flavors. For guests on a Multiple Night Stay, they even offered thoughtful touches such as switching pork to beef, which I really appreciated. The chilled milk and fruit juice included in the all-inclusive plan were delicious as well. At dinner, the French course began with venison as an appetizer; I was surprised by how mild-tasting and tender it was—truly excellent. If I had one request: since lighting in the Room is somewhat dim, I would have liked a desk lamp or similar light for reading or writing. Also, because the sink basin is high and shallow, water tends to run down to my elbows every time I wash my face—this was my only minor concern.
