    We stayed for one night during the Obon holidays with my daughter’s family. My son-in-law was visiting Kusatsu Onsen for the first time, and he really enjoyed the delicious meals and the yumomi experience at the Ryokan. All of the staff were kind, and even our 9-month-old grandchild was able to enjoy it, making it a wonderful trip. We would like to stay at Sakurai Ryokan again.

  • Kusatsu is Sakurai.

    I visit Kusatsu Onsen every year, and Sakurai Hotel is the best. First of all, the hot spring water is excellent. It also seems to have been renovated, and both the Room and the changing area were very clean. The hair dryer was the latest ReFa model.The food was delicious as well—especially breakfast, which left me completely full.The grilled salmon was great. I’d like to come again next year.

    Due to improvement work on Chuo Yubatake Street in Kusatsu Town and to ease traffic congestion, the Shuttle Service shuttle bus destination will be changed from “Yubatake” to “Kusatsu Onsen Bus Terminal.”
    We apologize for the inconvenience, but please walk from “Kusatsu Onsen Bus Terminal” to “Yubatake.” (Approx. 300 m)
    Shuttle Service pick-up from “Kusatsu Onsen Bus Terminal” will remain as usual; however, it may be crowded depending on the time of day.

  • [National Route 292 / Shiga-Kusatsu Road Fully Reopens to Traffic from May 29]

    National Route 292 (Sessho Gate–Shibu Pass Gate) had remained closed even after the winter closure because the volcanic alert level stayed at “2” for an extended period. On May 15, 2026, the alert level was lowered to “1.” After preparations were completed, the entire route reopened and is passable 24 hours a day from 13:00 on Friday, May 29 through mid-November.

    ●Access prohibited around the crater●
    According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the area within a 500 m radius of Yugama Crater is considered at risk of volcanic ash emissions. In response, Kusatsu Town has designated the area around the crater (within a 500 m radius) as a restricted zone under the Disaster Countermeasures Basic Act. Therefore:
    - Viewing Yugama is not permitted
    - Hiking trails leading into the restricted zone are temporarily closed
    - Shirane Rest House and the summit parking lot will remain closed until preparations are complete

    ●Reopening details●
    [Period] From 13:00 on Friday, May 29, 2026 to mid-November
    [Section] Sessho Gate (Kusatsu Town) – Manza Sansaro Junction (Tsumagoi Village)
    [Restrictions] With Alert Level 1 in effect, roads are fully open to traffic. *If the alert level rises again, restrictions may be reinstated based on evacuation plans.

    ●Use outside the restricted zone●
    Even outside the restricted zone, it will take time to complete safety checks and prepare parking areas and restrooms and to finalize walking routes. Please allow some time before these facilities reopen.

    The Shiga-Kusatsu Road—home to Japan’s highest point on a national highway—feels like another world even in midsummer. Please enjoy the spectacular scenery while staying safe.
