Savor locally sourced gourmet cuisine and an extraordinary getaway at our Hotel nestled among the ruins of Sasayama Castle.

A different world just an hour's drive from Keihanshin, Tamba Sasayama is a castle town centered around the nationally designated historic site of Sasayama Castle Ruins. The rural landscapes with traditional farming villages, rice fields, and mountain ranges, along with local agricultural products like Tamba Sasayama black adzuki beans and Tamba chestnuts, offer visitors a sense of peace and comfort. In 2017, the Dekansho Festival of Tamba Sasayama was selected as Japan's first "Japan Heritage" by the Agency for Cultural Affairs. Tamba Sasayama is blessed with abundant nature that nurtures renowned specialties known throughout the whole country. From rice praised for its stickiness and sweetness to black soybeans, matsutake mushrooms, chestnuts, premium Sanda beef, and wild game such as boar and deer raised in the surrounding mountains—this area truly is a treasure trove of branded ingredients. Sasayama Castle Town Hotel NIPPONIA reimagines the entire historic castle town as a hotel by restoring scattered historical buildings into accommodations. The guest rooms retain their original design while offering modern comfort in an elegant setting. For dinner, guests can enjoy authentic French cuisine featuring seasonal ingredients from Tamba Sasayama. From guest houses scattered across the castle town within walking distance to attractions like the grand hall of Sasayama Castle Ruins or samurai residences to long-established shops and trendy new spots—the harmony between old and new defines this unique destination. Experience "staying as if blending into" this charming town while enjoying a journey filled with relaxation and gourmet delights.

  • A Hotel that makes use of historic buildings scattered throughout the castle town of Tamba-Sasayama. The experience of blending into the town was exceptional.

  • I stayed at NIPPONIA HOTEL Sasayama, which I had long admired, during the pleasant season in April. Among the many buildings, I chose Room 101 in the “ONAE” building, once the residence of a former bank owner, and it was an even more wonderful stay than I expected. While preserving the charm of the historic structure to the fullest, amenities such as the bed were modern and spotless. I didn’t feel any of the inconveniences often associated with traditional houses.Unlike some Reviews mentioning coldness or other discomforts, I found no particular issues—the Room was extremely comfortable. In complete quiet, I was able to savor time passing slowly and luxuriously. The Hotel’s location is lovely, and a short walk brings you to a beautiful castle town streetscape that still retains traces of the Edo period. Strolling leisurely along these historic streets under gentle spring sunlight was truly peaceful. The ruins of Sasayama Castle and former samurai residences are also within walking distance. Most memorable of all was the attentive hospitality from the staff. From arrival onward they guided me with great care and kindness, and their warm manner helped me relax immediately. They were highly knowledgeable about both the building’s history and local attractions, and in every explanation I could feel their genuine love for this town.Delicious cuisine, Rooms rich with history, and smiling staff—everything came together for an exceptional holiday. I would absolutely like to return in another season. Thank you for such a wonderful time.

A different world just one hour by car from Osaka, a castle town blending history and nature, home to Japan's first "dispersed Hotel."

Tamba Sasayama is a charming town that, despite its proximity to the Keihanshin metropolitan area, preserves its rich natural environment, traditions, and historical landscapes. The nostalgic streets of the castle town centered around the nationally designated historic site of Sasayama Castle Ruins evoke a sense of familiarity, while the rural villages with their idyllic countryside and mountain views offer visitors a soothing retreat. Sasayama Castle Town Hotel NIPPONIA is a unique decentralized hotel concept that transforms the entire historic castle town into an accommodation experience. It features seven restored historical buildings scattered throughout the town, including structures such as an early Meiji-era former bank owner's residence over 100 years old and an Edo-period townhouse. The hotel offers 19 rooms in total.

Unique encounters only possible at a decentralized Hotel

The seven guesthouse buildings, named after chrysanthemums associated with Tamba Sasayama, are scattered throughout the castle town. Each building is unique and full of character. With options for exclusive use of an entire building or accommodations suitable for multi-generational families, each guesthouse has fewer than five rooms per building, allowing for a spacious and private stay. These historical buildings embody Japan's unique way of life, culture developed over time, the strength of historical spaces, and regional characteristics. Rather than discarding them due to age, they are preserved as treasures through sustainable efforts that make use of their original form as much as possible. By staying here, you also contribute to revitalizing the local community. After checking in at the ONAE building where the front desk and restaurant are located, enjoy strolling through the historic streets on your way to your room. (The farthest guesthouse is approximately 2 kilometers from ONAE; shuttle service by car is available for distant locations.) Exploring the town may lead to serendipitous encounters or interactions with local residents that enrich your journey even further. Immerse yourself in daily life here and experience Sasayama Castle Town's unique culture in a way that cannot be replicated elsewhere.
