A relaxing accommodation surrounded by seasonal nature, offering ancient hot springs and seasonal creative cuisine.

Oniiwa Onsen Ryōzan is located at the heart of a mountainous natural landscape stretching between the Nōbi Plain and the deep mountains of Hida and Kiso, surrounded by abundant nature to enjoy in every season. With heartfelt handmade cuisine, warm hospitality, and an exceptional space for relaxation, we look forward to welcoming you with innovative yet refined touches throughout.

  • The Accommodation consists of several separate buildings set on either side of a fast-flowing river with large boulders. It is surrounded by deep mountain forest. Although a national highway runs just behind the property and an expressway interchange is nearby—so traffic can be fairly heavy—traffic noise is barely audible. Thanks to the location and thoughtful landscaping, the road itself is not visible. Instead, you can clearly hear the sound of the rushing water, creating an authentic mountain atmosphere. On the grounds upstream along the valley stream, there is a café called Ryoan. It’s highly recommended for its wonderful ambiance, but please note that it takes several minutes on foot along a rough mountain path beside the gorge (more like a hiking trail). Guests are warned that it may be dangerous for young children (elementary school lower grades and under). It’s also difficult to access in traditional geta sandals. The renovated Room is clean, with new tatami mats and fittings. A large floor-to-ceiling window opens toward the terrace, with views of lush green mountains that make the space feel open and spacious. The outdoor bath on the wood deck—clean enough to step onto barefoot—is filled at bathing time (automatic setting; just under 20 minutes) before use. There is also a unit bath on the opposite side of the Room, which should be reassuring even in midwinter.Meals are served at tables in a large dining hall separated by low partitions. Dining times are staggered by table, so it remains quiet. The cuisine is excellent. Local junmai sake is also available in small bottles kept chilled in a bottle cooler. With the double-glazed windows closed, you won’t hear even the sound of water at all. It makes for a very quiet night.

  • I stayed here with my adult daughter while visiting family. Our Room was Senyotei—an elegant, thoughtfully designed guest room that was impeccably clean and offered the ultimate space to relax. My daughter, who was born and raised in the U.S., couldn’t stop expressing how impressed she was—from before stepping through the entrance to taking in every detail inside. I had been worried whether she could handle a traditional Japanese meal often served at a Ryokan, but it must have been so delicious—she finished everything. The hospitality from the front desk staff and attendants was also wonderful, and we had a very comfortable stay. Thank you very much.

A hot spring that wells up in Oniiwa Park, located within the Hida-Kisogawa Quasi-National Park. With a long history, this radioactive spring is said to have been discovered after people saw an injured white heron bathing here. Nearby lies Japan’s largest uranium deposit, and the spring is renowned for its high-quality radioactive waters. The hydrogen sulfide (uranium) spring is believed to help with cuts and high blood pressure.

Our chef’s seasonal kaiseki cuisine focuses on quality over quantity. Using carefully selected local ingredients such as wild sweetfish and Hida beef, we craft dishes that delight both the palate and the eye. Hot dishes are served hot, cold dishes cold—brought to you at the perfect moment so you can enjoy them at their very best.
