Autumn in Lake Kawaguchi (Fuji Five Lakes) (September–November)
Early autumn around Lake Kawaguchi, about 5°C cooler than Tokyo on average, is welcomed by delicate cosmos flowers in full bloom along the lakeshore. With an average temperature of 18.8°C in September, it’s comfortable for enjoying “autumn of the arts,” such as visiting museums around the lake. However, rainfall is as frequent as during the rainy season, so rain gear is essential. From late September, many days start to feel chilly, so we recommend long pants with a long-sleeve base layer and a thicker shirt or jacket.
In October—when Mt. Fuji’s first snowfall is often observed—temperatures drop quickly, with the average low falling to 9°C. In November, when autumn leaves are at their best, the average high is 14.0°C. Nighttime temperatures can fall below 3°C; at illuminated foliage spots it can be cold enough for bonfires to be lit. For peace of mind, dress warmly from head to toe with a thick base layer, sweater, coat, and boots.
