Founded in 1937. A Michelin four-star sukiya-style Accommodation featuring an in-room hot spring bath made of Japanese umbrella pine (Koya-maki).

Founded in 1937, Yamato-ya Besso—beloved by literary figures—is a purely Japanese-style Ryokan with 19 Rooms and a Michelin four-star rating. Within its time-honored sukiya-style architecture, each Room features an indoor hot-spring bath made of Koya-maki cypress. Meals are served in your Room by dedicated attendants, allowing you to savor the flavors of Iyo at a relaxed pace. This Accommodation is ideal for a personal retreat or a quiet, refined stay for adults.

  • It was a quiet, refined Accommodation with a calm atmosphere and no unnecessary extravagance. The staff’s greetings and attentiveness were never intrusive, yet their care reached every detail. The cuisine was excellent, each piece of tableware was beautiful, and the Onsen water was truly outstanding.

  • The wonderful hospitality here is not merely something cultivated over time; it is an intangible legacy passed down through generations, and feels like a treasure of Japan. The setting is superb, but the true dignity of this Accommodation comes from the people who support it. Staying at this Accommodation was not just a good experience, but a rare one that is hard to come by. Thank you very much.

Dogo Onsen, said to be Japan’s oldest hot spring, traces its origins to the legend of the white heron and is mentioned in records from many eras, including the Age of the Gods, Asuka, Kamakura, and Edo periods. Its alkaline simple spring water is famed as a “beauty bath,” and its silky-smooth waters soothe away daily fatigue. In addition to the large public bath, every Room features a private bath supplied with luxurious Dogo Onsen water.
