A tranquil Accommodation in harmony with nature, featuring open-air baths in all 16 rooms.
Beniya Mukayu is a villa-like Accommodation built to embrace a natural mountain garden, designed with an open, airy feel that lets the outdoor scenery flow in. With only 16 guest Rooms, every Room features a private open-air hot spring bath fed directly from the source and facing the mountain garden. “Mukayu” means simply being natural, without artifice. In the spirit of Zhuangzi’s words, we hope you will regain peace of mind through nature’s healing and enjoy quiet, tranquil moments.
The Accommodation’s calm atmosphere, the cuisine, and the baths were all wonderful, but what impressed me most was the exceptional hospitality of the staff. Everyone we spoke with combined deep knowledge with warm, attentive service, making our stay truly comfortable. I initially wondered if this trip might be a bit luxurious for traveling with my three underage sons, but they seemed to experience what true quality means, and I am now wholeheartedly satisfied.
まるこ33 8/17/2026We stayed here as a couple.Rather than a Ryokan, the property felt like a museum—an expansive space with calmness and refined elegance.Wood is used generously throughout, and the air carried a clean, distinctly Japanese scent reminiscent of hinoki cypress and herbs. It was clear that everything is meticulously maintained; the Room, lobby, and large public bath were all very clean, making our stay refreshing and comfortable.Every meal was delicious, but the charcoal-grilled ayu (sweetfish) and the takikomi rice with abalone and turban shell were outstanding. Not only the luxurious dishes impressed us—the simple steamed vegetables at breakfast also left a strong impression, with their natural sweetness shining through. We also appreciated that plenty of towels and bath towels were provided in both the large public bath and the open-air bath in our Room, so we could bathe as many times as we liked in complete comfort. It was such a wonderful experience that we would gladly make “staying at Muka-yu” the purpose of our trip itself.Thank you very much.

Introduction of the Accommodation

The Abundance Within Emptiness
“Mu Ka Yu” means “abundance within emptiness,” a name given by architect Kiyoshi Takeyama. It evokes time like an open blank space in your schedule—empty, and therefore free to be filled as you wish. It is also the calm comfort of resting in the shade of a seemingly useless giant tree. These feelings are embodied in the name “Mu Ka Yu.”

History of Mt. Yakushi
The Accommodation is built on a hill on Yakushi Mountain, once a sacred site of the Hakusan faith. The main hall of Yakuoin Onsen Temple once stood here, and it is said that monks devoted themselves to studying scriptures while also healing people through Onsen bathing services and the blending of medicinal herbs. Carrying on this tradition, the Accommodation features three quiet libraries for reading, two Onsen baths—“Gensei” and “Usuko”—and the Spa Enttei Treatment Institute, which offers treatments using Onsen water and medicinal herbs.

Harmony with Nature
Onsen are gifts of nature—blessings from the gods and Buddha. What Beniya Mukayu cherishes is respect for nature. To us, nature’s power is the quiet strength that soothes both mind and body—the very opposite of showiness or luxury. The Onsen here, the trees and dappled sunlight, and the changing seasons are all gifts bestowed by nature. We hope you will surrender yourself to these blessings and find your own place in nature—a place where you can feel safe, like a child.

The Welcome Trophy is an award presented to the property that excels most in hospitality among Relais & Châteaux member Hotels and restaurants worldwide. At the 38th Relais & Châteaux International Congress, where a gala dinner was held at the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Venaria Palace of the House of Savoy in Turin, Italy, Beniya Mukayu was introduced as the 2013 recipient of the Welcome Trophy. We are deeply grateful for this prestigious honor and will continue to devote ourselves to helping you enjoy even richer and happier moments.

The spring water is a calcium–sodium sulfate Onsen. This renowned Yamashiro hot spring is a gift from the sacred Mt. Hakusan. Its warming effects promote blood circulation, relieve fatigue, and the abundant minerals help support overall well-being.

There are 16 guest rooms in total, offering a quiet and peaceful stay. Every room faces a natural mountain garden where trees spread their branches, creating an open design that brings the outdoor scenery inside. Each room also features a private open-air bath overlooking the garden, so you can enjoy an Onsen soak at any time.

“Kaiseki Horin” is a dining venue with a front-facing view of the mountain garden scenery. Featuring an abundance of exceptional Kaga-Noto ingredients, you can enjoy a wide variety of seasonal delicacies—bamboo shoots and horsehair crab in spring, sweetfish and rock oysters in summer, blackthroat seaperch and matsutake mushrooms in autumn, and snow crab and sweet shrimp in winter.

Beniya Mukayu is a quiet Onsen Accommodation on the heights of Yakushiyama, on the former site of the main hall of Yakuoin Onsen-ji Temple. Carrying on the traditions of “Yakushiyama,” where monks are said to have healed people through Onsen bathing and herbal remedies, we offer care for body and mind through a range of treatments, including the “Yakushiyama Treatment” using Onsen and medicinal herbs. We also offer a wellness-focused stay Plan, “Yakushiyama Wellness Retreat.”
