A luxurious Accommodation quietly nestled in a mountain village just outside Takayama’s city center. We welcome you by the warm glow of an irori hearth fire. All rooms are suites: main-building guestrooms overlooking the Miyagawa River, a first-class river, and private annex villas surrounded by abundant nature. Leave the bustle of the city behind and enjoy a special experience in a private space embraced by the sound of the river and untouched wilderness. In July 2024, we were awarded a Michelin Key in the Michelin Guide, honoring Accommodations that offer an especially outstanding experience.
All the other guests besides me were international visitors. Many were travelers from Europe rather than Asia, and everyone had a calm, relaxed demeanor, which made my stay very comfortable.The bath was used as a private bath on a time-slot basis. I assumed this system might be in place because there are many international guests, but after trying it, I found it to be a wonderful luxury—allowing me to enjoy quiet, private time at my own pace. The meals were also excellent, making for a highly satisfying stay.This time I stayed in a Room with an irori hearth. It was spacious and full of character—a lovely Room—but perhaps due to the season, I noticed a slight damp, mold-like smell. Even in summer, measures such as lighting the irori for a short time to reduce indoor humidity might make the stay even more comfortable.Overall, it was very cozy Accommodation and one I would like to visit again.
pomme_Az 8/11/2026It took about two hours to travel from Osaka to Takayama, and then we enjoyed a walk before arriving at the Ryokan. The staff member, Mr./Ms. A, was wonderful, and we were able to truly relax. There is nothing around, so it’s perfect if you want to focus on spending quiet time there.

The only Onsen in the whole country to hold this title, “Hida Kuraiyama Onsen,” offers two types of baths: a hinoki-wood bath and a rock bath. Both feature gentle water that excels at moisturizing and heat retention, keeping your body warm until the next day.

At Wanosato, we offer seven distinctive Rooms, including private annexes in traditional gassho-zukuri style and a 160-year-old historic farmhouse. From the large, carefully designed glass windows in every Room, nature appears like a painting, while the gentle murmur of the clear Miyagawa River soothes the heart like music.
The grand hearth in the main lobby remains the heart of Wanosato—used for brewing tea, slowly grilling river fish, and in the evenings, storytellers serve kappo sake. Lose track of time by the warm flames, and enjoy conversation with fellow travelers—one of the true pleasures of a journey.

Alcohol-based disinfectant
We disinfect all Facilities and equipment with alcohol and provide hand sanitizer at entrances and other locations. We kindly ask all guests to sanitize their hands when using our Facility.
Cleaning
Frequently touched areas such as doorknobs, TV remote controls, refrigerator handles, futons, and sliding doors are disinfected with hypochlorous acid water and further sterilized using a UV LED sterilizer. We also ventilate the lobby area, dining areas, and other spaces regularly.
Staff
All employees are required to wear masks and thoroughly practice handwashing, gargling, and alcohol disinfection. At the start of each shift, we check body temperature and confirm physical condition for symptoms such as fatigue. Any employee with a fever of 37.5°C or higher or who is feeling unwell will not report to work and will remain at home.
